Rotary dial.  Then you can take a picture for the Photo Challenge thread.

Seriously, just get a bottle of Lestoil big enough to cover your aluminum parts.  You can add hot water if you don't have enough Lestoil, but the stronger the solution the quicker it works.  Use a plastic container big enough to hold 2 to 3 times the level of the covered parts because this will slowly foam up.  A little plastic cleaning bucket or something works.  Do this where there is good ventilation because it smells and I don't know what's in the fumes.  Shouldn't be too harmful but it smells like a gas station bathroom that's been cleaned with Pinesol.
Dismantle whatever is going to be treated with the cleaner, place in bucket, and wait as it foams up.  Check it after a few hours.  I wouldn't go more than 4, 2 worked for my carb and other small parts I've done.
Wear vinyl gloves and rinse with running water.  You can use a plastic toothbrush to get the slime off.   Dry it and use WD40 or water displacing oil to get all the water out of the passages.  It'll be soft and leave gray stains on your hands that washes off with soap and water.  After a day or so that stops.
This will work on valves covers and any smaller aluminum parts.
Remember:  Ventilation (outdoors is best) and rubber gloves (vinyl are best).

Reminds me of when I used Pine-sol to clean my BMW carbs - I was clueless, and the person instructing me fail to mention that I should dilute it with water.  I was afraid I killed them; they went super-dull battleship-gray, and lots of gunk (oxidized material?) sloughed off when I tried to clean them:

looks good, that's the patina I'm looking for on my B5 side cases ......   how long did you soak in Pinesol ?

Will do.  Makes me want to check every fastner on it before I take it out again.

I don't think Pinesol or Lestoil will react with steel that way.  The only way I know of to get a parkerized looking finish on steel it to actually parkerize it.  It's not that hard to do at home.  There are kits available through Internet outlets like Midway USA.
I wouldn't mess with any home brew as it's iffy to the final finish.
The procedure is simple, but usually requires sandblasting the parts, cleaning all oils off, not touching with your bare hands etc.  Heating the solution to about 185 deg F and waiting for the parts to stop bubbling.  Then wash in water followed by a water displacing oil like WD40.  The parts harden over a couple of days.

Rode up the canyon to see the fire.  Orange flames popped over the ridge just as I started the bie to leave, but by then it was too dark for pics

D the D - I think Gremlin's engine side covers are made of aluminum.

Pauly - I'm afraid your side stand has developed a very bad leak!  ;)

Oh you guys and your quest for low weight and speed I thought he meant his tool boxes.
In that case, it takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours in undiluted cleaner.  You can pull the parts out and look for the grey color developing and leave it in as long as needed.

The other day I noticed that my bike was sounding louder and backfiring. Once I got home I checked out the exhaust pipe, one of the nuts that holds it one was gone and the other wasn't even finger tight. I was able to get another nut and lock washer for it today. It's all good now. I guess that's what happens when I spend almost every day at the hospital.

Changed out the engine oil in the primary case to Type F ATF.  The clutch seems to be slipping less but I only went around the neighborhood, maybe a couple miles.  Maybe I'll go for a ride after work.

Foot slipped off the RH peg.  Burned the crap out of my right inner shin on the exhaust pipe.  Does anyone make floorboards for a C5?

Haven't seen any floorboards, but the Indians may have some. There are heatshields available though.

Just broke 900 miles on the clock this morning. Since my street will be re-paved over the next two days , a perfect time to do an early oil change, and clean and polish. She's really smoothed out and I'm getting the hang of using the bi starter to kick start her.  :)

Hi, just wondering how cold it is that you have to use the bi starter. We had a (too) long cold winter and I had only to use it a couple of times with temps in the 20's Fahrenheit.

It just seems that using the BiStarter is the only way I can get it to kick start. My leg is only good for one decent kick, so when I started using it now I can get it to start 4 out of 5 times.
