DanB - Where is that?  I grew up on the central part of the WI/IL border, Beloit area.  I never remember being thru there before.

Between Genoa and Ringwood, a good deal east of Beloit. Little town not to fair away from morries (there's some nice back road twisties). I took the pic, came to a small stop sign, kids playing outside on a Farmall, I stalled it in the intersection. One kick (no estart)  back in business and they all clapped.... Always happens when people watching.

Oh , today, yes. The GT is all good . But the G5, oh that is another matter. Having developed some new noises of late and a sudden increase in vibration it was time to check things out and find out what is really going on. After stripping the side cases first issue is play in the alternator side main bearing. Primary drive side , all ok.
Removed head, oh dear. Heavy carbon build-up, looks like the valves will need re-seating. Removed barrel.  Although piston crown has heavy carbon build-up the bore is good. Removed piston. Connecting rod can be rocked side to side on the big-end bearing (not side float). So looks like new main bearings and big-end bearing at the very least. That's after just 18k miles.

The service manual doesn't give a value for the amount of distance the connecting rod can be rocked.  It says the "Axial movement" which I interpret to be the side to side movement should be 0.20-0.55mm when new with a 0.65mm service limit. (.0079-.0217 inches new, .0256 inches service limit).

Part of the reason for this is with the relatively short rollers, a very small amount of clearance will allow the upper end of the connecting rod to rock back and forth more than would be expected.  This doesn't mean the bearing is worn out.

Edit added:  The bearings in the big end appear to be in the needle bearing class.
The Service manual lists it as part number "NRB 35 X 42 X 20" which would make it a Needle Roller Bearing for a 35mm (1.378") diameter crankshaft journal X 42mm (1.6535") connecting rod bore X 20mm (.7874") long.
That would make the "needles" slightly less than 3.500 (.1378) in diameter.

Thanks for the info , Arizoni. I'll check it further when I split the cases. Currently the axial movement looks on the outer limits , which could explain the rocking. Have to say I am still more in tune with the Ducati singles I rode for years and expect closer tolerances. At the very least I will be replacing mains bearings.

This morning,I took my wife on a 40 mile round trip for breakfast. All on a nice 2 lane rural road. The bike ran fine, and it was a nice ride. The bike is approaching 1200 miles,so I ran it up to 65mph,and the mirror was clear. I prefer 55-60mph,which I ride most of the time.        Lynn

I did nothing to my C5 since I parked her on my back porch Sunday night. I travelled to Wash. D.C. on Monday for a week of work. I really wish I could have ridden.

Smiled, said please and thank you, no penalty fees :)  Went pretty easily.  I think the key at DMV is not to pretend your problems are their problems.  They didn't forget to register my bike, they even sent me a nice reminder.  Kinda makes me look like an idiot really.

Yeah...I've started a few conversations at the DMV with "So, I'm an idiot and forgot to..."  It almost always goes well.

I was there when the door opened.  There were about 25 people and 3 or 4 people working the desk.  How bad could it really be for everyone waiting?  Yet almost all the people who didn't go right up to the counter sat down, frowned,  and immediately started complaining to each other.  Really?  Nobody wants a bad attitude first thing in the morning when they start work.  It doesn't take much to smile, even if you do have a problem.  It's amazing how far a smile and please & thank you go to make someone's day a little easier.  I don't relish going to DMV but I try not too make it worse for the people who spend all day every day there.

Had my rear tail light blow at night, again!
400 miles to the globe, does that sound right?

I would be looking for a short in the wiring. I had that with my aftermarket turn signals. Bulbs blow faster than fuses.

If it was a fuse I would agree on the idea of a short in the wiring but being a bulb, I just chalk their short lives up to the quality of Indian light bulbs + the vibration of a big single chugging merrily down the highway. :)

No, my bulbs last longer than 400 miles but I can't think of a bulb except for the ones in the speedometer that I haven't had to replace at least once.
