Holly improvising - that is awesome!!   Bummer on the cover.  Looks like you are riding a 2014 C5.  You will never know, but I wonder if the "new and improved" plastic latch broke of?  My 2014 C5 has the same plastic lock and it is not confidence inspiring.

My G5 had a metal strap bolted on to keep the battery captive. The cover had nothing to do with the battery staying on.

When I got my bike new from the dealer the "tech" had left the battery hose off. It was two days of acid spilling onto my electrical box before I noticed. By then the damage was done. I got my Anti-Gravity brand lithium battery. I also repainted the damaged paint but in spite of the claim of not needing primer, the VHT paint has some fisheye. I'll let it solidify for a while before I try again. Not perfect but acceptable. The battery is amazing! It cranks faster than the lead acid OEM, weighs next to nothing and is so small I'm trying to figure out what to do with all that extra space in the battery box. Carry tools?

$119 plus shipping. It got here in less than 24 hours. This thing is so small I could carry one in a pocket as a spare.

Did you neutralize the acid before painting it?

Had a sunny ride round the coast to Dawlish Air Show. Glad I was on two wheels - miles and miles of traffic tailback. We were all going to see the world's best aerobatic team, the Red Arrows. Wow! Precision flying. Thrilling!

Replaced the broken speedometer cable and rode and entered a motorcycle/hotrod show--Nice to know how fast I am going since 17.8 miles---btw, the bullet gathered the most lookers and questions were aplenty.

Replaced both worn out AM26's with Bridgestone BT45's. Front went on fine, but of course I somehow pinched the rear tube, and could not, no matter how much foul language I used, get the new tire back off. That's the 5th rear tube in 9500 miles. I'm beginning to think the rear wheel is haunted.
