I determined last night that  the solenoid died again.  That's the second one.  I opened it and cleaner the contacts, it worked for about 3 seconds after that.  Time to get something bigger, maybe a nice Ford solenoid.

I took the battery out for the winter and brought it inside... :(

Scotty - These are pretty dependable starter relay for a Ford 5.0 ltr from the late 80's to late 90's.  I sold probably close to 100 of them in 2 years working for Advance and only returned maybe a half dozen or so.

How long did both worked?
My first went out at approx 16000 kms (10000 miles).

One died after a year and a half, the other about two years.  I picked up two different Ford solenoids today.  I'll have to see which fits better.

I'm confused.  Are you talking about the solenoid that makes the starter gear engage?  Or are you meaning the relay that powers the starter circuit?

I've got two Ford relays.  I get back to town New Years Eve, so hopefully I'll have enough Tim to fit one and get the bike running for the New Years Day ride.

Yesterday I charged up my battery (still haven't gotten around to replacing the alternator.  Again.) And took a short Christmas ride around town and stopped by my best friends house for a while.  It was actually a quite pleasant ride at about 50°F.  I had a great Christmas.

Dumbest thing yet.  When I re-installed the starter I had put the power and ground lines on the same post.  Ugh!  Sorted quickly and not it lives again.

On a bright note, the Ford starter relay fits in really well, easier than I expected and bolted to the stock mounts with a tiny mod.  This one should never burn out, but if it does I can get one anywhere for $12.  I have it all together and running for tomorrow's ride but I'll be taking it apart and rewiring it cleanly.  Better cable ends and probably replace the stiff OEM battery cables with some larger, more flexible ones.

Scott, I've gotta do that myself - after my OEM battery cable ends broke, and my "quality" NAPA replacements broke, too!  It was suggested that I look into getting wiring made up of welding cable, IIRC.  Please let us know what you do...

I'm planning on doing exactly the same.  Check out McMaster Carr.  They sell welding cable by the foot at reasonable prices.  Ends and boots too I think.
