Spent the afternoon yesterday having my primary cover welded.  I called a few shops earlier in the week and most of them said it would be a few weeks before they could get to it.  So I called up a friend who knows a guy and gave me his phone #.  He was more than happy to be able to help to me out.  So I took a 25 minute ride to his place and he got right to work on it.   A few hours, a few beers and burgers later, I had a VERY well repaired primary cover.  And it only cost me $30 and a 6 pack of beer.  Well, $35, I gave him a $5 tip for doing such a great job.

Rode my vintage Bullet near 100 miles today.  Houston to Baytown and back.  Bike ran good.  New coil, carb tuneup with new jetting and NGK plug.  50 miles each way and took me hour with very little freeway lanes.  No faster than 100km per hour. 


What, more than one Bullet in Baytown at the same time?

Chinese food beats hopes and dreams any day.

yes, I crossed that bridge twice on Sat.,  coming and going.  Its windy up there...

In my day as a young adult, we crossed the Channel using Baytown/La Porte tunnel that existed for decades in the same spot as the bridge is now.  One lane each coming and going, and they shut it down on Tuesday nights for cleaning.

My Ford Fiesta had to be towed out of that tunnel twice! Clogged fuel filter, I think. If you were backed up there during p.m. drive time between 1985 and 1989, I may have been the problem!

Tacked another 30 mile quickie around town. On return lubed the chain, removed the megaphone silencer and packed it 1/2 full with fiberglass. Put another 10 miles on it and like the sound!

Today I adjusted my G5's drive chain.
I had replaced the original RE chain at 3750 miles with a made in America Diamond 530 chain and after riding the bike several hundred miles I needed to adjust it again.
That's pretty common because the new chain does stretch a bit as it breaks in.

Anyway, after 6800 miles (10968 km) of riding the chain had loosened up to the point that it needed adjusting.
The hardest part was getting the old cotter pin out of the castled nut.

I did try the "string" method of aligning the rear wheel but rather than running the string just down one side of the wheels I ran it from the lower rear of the rear tire to the lower front of the front tire.  Then taking a wrap around the front tire I ran the string on the other side of the bike back to the lower rear of the rear tire.
Doing it this way it was easy to see if the front wheel was turned a bit one direction or the other and the distance from the sides of the rear tire to the string on both sides confirmed one another.
Once again, the two snails on the rear have different notches engaged with their pins when the wheel is tracking straight.

Replaced my spark plug with the BPR6ES and removed my side stand switch completely.  I haven't had any trouble with either in 1800+ miles but I've had the plug for a while and thought why not on the switch since I was down there anyway.  Seems to idle a little smoother on startup but still backfires periodically on decel.

I did absolutely nothing myself too.  The bike is still in pieces waiting on the crankshaft seal.

Wiped the skudgey fuel from the tank with some spray cleaner.  Thats almost nothing.

I didn't do anything either.
It's 112* F outside and it's only noon.  Looks like 118 is easily possible today.
Even my RE is farting without the engine even running!  :o

Oh!  I forgot, most of you don't have a California bike so you don't know what I'm talking about.

The sealed fuel tank is vented thru the charcoal canister but it has a valve in the line that lets the pressure inside the tank build up to some unknown pressure.  When that pressure is reached the valve lets some of it out with a "fruuuuuump" sound.
Normally, the only times it does this is after I've ridden a ways and then stopped the bike.  The heat from the engine expands the fuel in the tank so the bike goes "fruuuuuuump".  :-[

Yah, 118 is a bummer but I'll still take it to temperatures below freezing.  I might sweat a lot but that beats having some valuable part of my anatomy freeze off.  ;D
