Unlike some major companies, Royal Enfield is constantly improving their bikes by improving problem hardware.

Redesigning things like the wiring harness or changing the fuel level switch design and changing to the new design without waiting for the "next year" production to start seems to be common with them.

I'm not sure how well they keep their part number books and maintenance manual up to date but hopefully they do.

Is that the official part number? :P

And the Bosch POS is better than the Lucas one. Be sure it's blue and marked "Bolivia".   ;)

Grew the blue spot on my pipe from the upper bend down to the lower bend.  My friend's battery had died so we hooked it up to my bike to get some charge into it.  Noticed a funny smell while running at a good RPM while on the stand.  Guess that's what cooked chrome smells like :)

Replace the engine top brace bolt at the head.  The "Self Locking" nut was on the oil tank, don't know what road the bolt chose to call home.

Had my bike delivered second hand today,  checked the spark plug which was cremated (but not melted) so changed that.

The RE seems to attract and hold onto nuts :)

Went out on I-70 East and got my first taste of cruising at 75mph.  Bike felt real good and is running great.  Opened it up on a back road and hit an indicated 117mph, which I thought was good for 102mph.  Went back out with the GPS and it turns out it's only good for 89mph.  Still decent, but I know I can do better.  I'm going to look into running dual carbs so I can get everything out of the top end.

Sounds like you might even get everything out of the bottom end too.  ;D

Remember, these engines are built on a 1949 500cc twin lower end that RE did not strengthen when they started adding bigger pistons.

They didn't get around to actually strengthening and improving the lower end on the big twins until 1969 with the introduction of the series II Interceptor.

Rode to work... Passed 9500 miles. Two problems: headlight was out last week. I have an aftermarket light with an H4 bulb. Rode to work Monday and today, and this afternoon I noticed the low beam was out. Switched to high, and by the time I got home the high beam was out, too! Any clues? Voltage regulator? Not sure where to start.

2nd problem was that the chain was wanting to hop off. It didn't, but I was worried about making the 35 mile trip home. I replaced the chain about 2000 miles ago, and the front sprocket had been switched by the dealer to an 18T a couple thousand miles before, so I didn't replace the sprockets. Guess I'll do both of them now plus the brake shoes and cush drive, and get an O-ring chain.

Supposed to hit 99 degrees late next week, so I'm about through riding until late September. Yes, I'm a wimp. 38 degrees is preferable!

I think some automotive headlight bulbs aren't made to take the vibration a big single can make.  They are usually made to cope with voltages up to 17v like the rest of the vehicle bulbs so if your other lights aren't burning out, excess voltage is not likely to be your headlights problem.

Replaced chains stretch too.
Unless the teeth on the sprockets show abnormal wear or the tips are bent, try adjusting the chain to where it should be and ride on. :)

Alan: Sawtooth.. Good pic, classic example of worn sprocket.. Yeah I just put a new chain on mine at just over the 10 k mark and didn't change the sprockets...Nothing close to what u have but will keep a eye open for that issue..I'm assuming u oiled the chain and kept up on the adjustment...Either way, you have a bit of work ahead for ya, hopefully in a cool garage..Good luck..GM
