I pulled out of the gas station on Tuesday (a little fast) and hear a new loud vibration. It occurs around 20 mph. I cannot recreate it on the center stand by reving. I washed and touched everything, nothing seems loose or broken. I shuffled the wiring nest to see if that was the problem. Gas cap is closed and fine. Front fender is solid. No fender stays are broken. It sounds like it is coming from the gastank, but the bolts front and back are tight and in place. The front plate (under the headlight) is solid.

Any suggestions on what am I missing?

Thanks,
-Rick

Check your head steady. Check your horn mount.

I don't know how many miles you have on your bike, but you might try checking your steering head bearings, too.

With the bike on the center stand and the weight off the front wheel (block up the front of the engine), move around to the front of the bike and grab the forks by the axle. Try to move the front wheel front to back and back to front (be careful you don't pull it off the blocking) if there is any play and clunking you need to adjust the steering head bearings.

Horn and head steady are good. I will check the steering head bearing.

Make sure the mounts on the tank are intact.  Welds might have broke free.Might just have to do a complete walk around to find it.

Had an Sporty that did that found the kick stand mount was loose.  Tightened it up and all was well.

I had one of the rear brackets on the tank my 07 break off.

It could be that single bolt on the bottom of the plate that holds the coil has come loose...

As far as I know, many gas tanks are built with internal baffles- nothing intricate mind you- but it halps to keep gas from sloshing around hard.   My aluminium tank has them.  My stock tank is in the basement- maybe i shoud actually look inthere before losing my nickel... ?

Otherwise- loose turnsignal, HL ring, bolts the hold the fender stays (not just the braces themselves), key ring bouncing around... that's all I got.

Sometimes on my bike, the tank vibrates against the frame, if I do't have it positioned and tightened just right.

Tightened the tank, tightened a loose spoke, still hearing it. I was wrong though, I believe it is not from speed, but from engine vibration. Coasting at 20 is quiet. Not sure what RPM up a bit, lower RPM is quiet.

My spag is fragged. I opened the primary and there were the little bits. I don't see how, but could the sprag clutch be causing the noise? I am going to fix it regardless, but figured I would ask.

I had sprag teeth in the bottom of my primary for a little while.  No rattles there.

Ya know- more than one person has reported strange rattles only to find it was their valves during normal use.  They would start to clatter more as RPM's increase.

Anything that would throw te crankshaft out of balance could do it.  So a fried frag would be within the realm of possibilities.  Probably the vibes started when she let go.

Maybe time for the kick start only conversion kit.  Can't see how it could be any more expensive than replacing the sprag only.

Things I've had cause the same symptom.
Almost but not quite tight front mount plates, head steady and tank mounts.
No matter where you go, there, you are.

I got the spag clutch out. Pretty broken up. I am going to sleep on whether to go KS only or replace it. Part of me wants to button it up and check for the sound, but I really don't want to take it apart again if I don't have to.

My valves are good. I laugh at how many times I adjusted them in my first six months, they have stayed fine for so long.

The head steady is solid, I will check the front mounts.

I rarely used the ES, but I did on the run going to the gas station, no clunk or other sound, but it had been used 5 minutes before I got my gas and kicked started it, then the sound started.

One thing at a time I guess.

Thanks,
-Rick

Sprag Clutch - $300. I want to cry. I may just put it on the shelf and install it right before selling the bike down the road.

Plus shipping.

I'm somewhat surprised;  for it to be that broken up, I would have thought it would make a big noise.  I only lost 2 teeth, but it sounded like the bike got hit with a cosmic hammer.

Anyhoo- that's why I just kick it all the time now.  The sprag is still in my bike.  Lot-O-Dough.
