I can't remember what the inside looks like, but there's 2 tubes;  The longer / taller one is "on", and the shorter one is "reserve".  Usually, there is a screen to keep schmutz out of thos tubes.  Perhaps your screen is covered, torn, missing.

You'll need to drain the gas and remove the petcock for inspection.

Years ago, draining and cleaning the gas tank was scheduled maintenance on BMW's.  Depressing what collects in there...

There was a thread here on fuel taps assembled incorrectly.

Search the threads for more info. IIRC it is a simple matter to remedy.

If it ran before on reg, and all of a sudden it only runs on reserve, the main line on the petcock is blocked.
When you get it apart take a CLOSE look inside you tank, maybe add a in line filter.
If it IS blocked, take you carb bowl off and lookie in there also

1. Drain the tank
2. Remove the fuel line from the bottom of the petcock
3. Remove the petcock from the tank
4. Remove the outer gauze filter carefully
5. Check the top of the petcock. The long tube is the main and the lower untubed hole, actually in the petcock is the reserve.
 6. Remove the tube and make sure it's clean

If you haven't found a blockage yet, you need to CAREFULLY dismantle the petcock and clean it out.

Watch out for a spring behind the lever as you dismantle. It will make a bid for freedom.
