Over 3000 miles on the bullet and I still feel like a newbie, must be a slow learner 8)

I have misplaced Pete's manual.  Is there a quick and dirty way to check if my chain needs adjusting?

Just a late night thought while tightening nuts for the morning commute.

Cheers!

The owner's manual explains it.

I adjust it if I feel excessive lash while rolling off the throttle. You want about 1.5" to 2" of slack along the bottom run of the drive chain. Do not make it too tight.

You also need to keep the primary chain adjusted, I believe with about 0.5" of play. But you should look it up in the manual.

I don't have my owner's manual or Snidal with me right now, so I can't check myself.

My factory manual is a bit confused on the amount of chain freeplay, on
page 41 it says "1/4 inch upward deflection midway betweent the trans and rear
sprocket. On pg 42 it says while on the centerstand the minimum free play
should be 25 to 30 mm. Pete's manual (3rd addition) says 2 inches slack with
bike on the centerstand and 37 mm with the bike on the ground with some rider
weight. I have been using Pete's guidelines for 16000 miles and have no
complaints.

Don't forget to check the chain tension a number of times as you turn the rear wheel, just in case the holes punched in the sprockets aren't dead centre and you have tight spots.

Thanks all. ;D

Must take good care of the bike.

She is misbehaving this evening, cut off twice at lights.  I suspect the mix has wandered rich again with the weather change.  All part of the experience.

Cheers!
