I have a 2003 Bullet Classic with the Exported linkage of shifter and rear brake switch over. My brake light will not come on when I depress the rear brake lever. The lever attached to a spring on the left side of the bike seems to be very sloppy. Any suggestions or ?. [corkif44@yahoo.com)

Check the wires on the switch.  I have had mine work loose several times from engine vibrations.

I have the four speed right foot change but assume the rear brake switch is the same?

It obviously needs to pull the spring/plunger out to make contact when you depress the brake pedal. If it is only taking up the slack then the plunger won't move so giving no operation. Mine has a quadrant with different holes so you can fit the pull spring in further/out further to change the activation point.
Does the light come on if you manually pull it? If yes, there's your answer.
If no, you can easily test the wiring by having a test lead (ie. a small piece of wire with both ends bared and put it across the two contact. This should light up the bulb when ignition is on etc. If not there is a break in the wiring/bulb blown. If it does it is the switch that is unserviceable or not being actually activated so see above etc.

Good luck!

It seems that the lever itself is the problem. It will not pull the spring to actuate the switch. The brake light works fine with the front brake lever. I may need to obtain a new actuation lever. Any recommendations?

Got the same problem with my '02 Clasic. Light still does not come on when the spring is pulled by hand, but the front lights it fine. Have to get in there with a meter tomorow, I'll let you all know what I find.  don

Check for continuity on the two leads to see if the switch is working.  The switch itself may have just gone bad.

The front brake light operates the light so you know the bulbs is working.
It's now easy to check for the rear operation without removing a thing

1) Open side panel as the large pic above shows.
2) Turn Ignition switch 'On'
3) Short the top two terminals together (the pair with the screws holding the wires onto the switch) with a wire or even a large flat blade screwdriver can be used to bridge them.

If the tail light illuminates all is well with the wiring loom to and from the brake light. Suspect the switch is dirty/unserviceable is some way.
No illumination? Suspect a wiring fault.
Most likely cause is just a dirty switch as the front end is open to the elements. Very easy to sort out though eh? WD40 and a good few push/pulls will do the trick probably  ;D

Well, I figured it out. My switch worked as I pulled the spring. Whoever had the bike previously mounted the actuation lever incorrectly. After some garage time and using my head for something other than a hat rack, I tried various positions on the actuation lever, the one with the adjustment holes, and now it works beautifully. I am so glad to have all the assistance  and comments you made. This is trully an assest to owming an RE. Merry Christmas too all, no matter what or who you are.
