I need to replace my rear tire and since my dealer is pretty far away and the local shop that replaced it last year just went out of business, I am thinking of replacing the tire myself.  I've seen the how-to threads and Youtube videos, but a question about balancing.  Is it necessary, or even possible to balance the wheel/tire assembly after mounting a new tire?  Or do you just make sure it is evenly situated in the rim?

I don't know about Bernies beads, but -
You usually find a red dot that goes opposite the valve stem.  There should be some kind of arrow on the tire to show which direction the tread goes.  Then balance the wheel using self-adhesive weights.
Make SURE the bead is seated, ie- it's in the rim all the way, all the way around.

Every tire I've ever installed, or, in the case of cars, had installed, the dot on the tire went next to the valve stem. I've never heard of it being otherwise, Ernie. Where did you get that info?

Once again, Uncle Ernie's dislexia has kicked in.
The mark denotes the light spot on the tire. Few tires use the mark anymore as production methods have increase accuracy to the point there is, in theory at least, well balanced tires. People lined the mark up against the valve stem, theorizing that was the heavy spot on the wheel (not always the case though).
Michelin never used the spot, as a matter of pride, claiming their tires were well made and round.
Heck, we are happy if the Ural rim has some semblence of round, and not too egg shaped. :-\
