I am buying an AVL from out of state. It comes with a 7" light. I understand that the 7" light is not DOT approved. Will I have to change it to the original light for registration inspection.

What State are you in?   In Florida they don't even look at the bike when doing title and registration, at least in my DMV office...

 If you need a DOT light let me know,  I have 2 of em sitting in my garage.

I am in CA. They do inspect the vehicle, but I am not sure if they will go into that detail. I have the original as well, but do not know if I should pop the original back in for the inspection.

I would,  its easy and saves a possible re-inspection fee by the commies at DMV...

I was an inspector here in North Carolina.  For cars, we had some kind of machine that measured light intensity and direction.  For motorcycles, it was just "can I see it?" and is there a hi-lo.   If anything, the 7" light is brighter- so I wouldn't worry about it.

For things like this where the specific laws vary from state to state, go by an inspection station and ask them what's involved in the inspection.

"Those things" Scotty are very good and were designed by people who were interested in avoiding mishaps on the highways.
I'm amazed today how much glare the new light put out. The Japanese cars are still using that cut off pattern. Maybe some of the Europeans also.

I ordered the 7" light kit. I have this non sealed beam. I wonder of the 'male' plug will fit the 'female' socket on the bike. I have not opened the light on my bike but if some one has, does this lok like a 'match made in heav...'

Thanks.

Looks like the back of my black dot halogen lamps..  They fit well enough, I had to rearrange the wiring behind the lamp and fold over the tongs on the bulb to about 45degrees to get it to fit as that black rubber bit takes up more space than the stock setup.   Also, on my 07' I had to trim some off the transparent rubber boot off the stock female plugs.

Thanks Gary. I have been told that the three prongs are for high, low and 'very low' beam. Is that so ? Where is the button for the very low beam. I am going to get 55/60W halogen bulb for this. Is there such a bulb with three beams.

Hi, Low and ground actually..  I have noticed the halogens are much brighter than either my 7" or the stock 5-3/4" sealed beams were.   No ultra low, but I do have a flash position on my 95' that puts juice on Hi and Lo at the same time.

When I switch from low to high or back, I get the "very low" - pitch dark... :o

I don't have a three-prong plug on my '07... it has three individual wires.  If I recall correctly, I have orange on the left, green in the middle and blue on the right...

Br. Thump, I get low and high beam (when I switch, of course) on my 2004 Sixty-5's 7" Tri-Bar... and, as Gary said, the halogen bulb is very bright even on the low beam setting... you'll enjoy the fruits of your labor!

It sounds as if your wires might be mixed up. I had that happen on mine. I just switched them around until they where bright and brighter.

the wiring is left =high top=low right=common (earth)

if you mix the common and the high , then the circit runs thru both fillimants and produces a dim light  if you mix , the low and high wires you switch will be reversed .

you "should" be able to get the matching plug , to extend your loom from an auto shop , or a car breakers

most bikes (in the UK) have a smaller pilot light below the main bulb , dating back to the days when we had to leave a light on , when parked at night , not sure about the american bikes , but in europe the switch has off/side (pilot)/headlamp , then the dip/main switch alongside

again , in the UK , we drive/ride on the left , (most of europe is on the right) , and as such our lights dip and cutoff to the left ,

when I did my halogen conversion I had to swap
the green and the blue for it to be correct.

blue = high beam

green = low beam

if the wires were reversed , the dip setting on the switch would put the high setting on , and the high would light the low beam

The headlight turns on when the ignition key is turned on. Is there a way to disable that feature.

Probably the same as the stock casquette;  remove the 3 inch jumper cable inside with all the wiring.  Just unplugs and the wires left in there plug back into each other.

Is 'the stock casquette' the module into which the headlight fits.

Yeah- or call it the cowl.  Right behind the stock light is a relatively thick cable- mine is encased in what looks like corrugated pipe like they use to drain yards.  (I'm going by memory...)  Anyway, right in the middle is about 3 inches and each end has square plastic plugs, or connectors.  Just take that piece out and connect the cable so there's no interruption.
I don't know why, but that will make it so you have to push the botton to turn you HL on -or off.
I haven't put the light you have on, so I don't know what you did with all those wires that wee hidden behind the stock set-up.

7" tri-bar halogen:The best 50 dollars I spent on the bike. It looks really kool, and is pretty bright. It also turns on when I flick the switch.

Thanks for the help.
