It is possible to relocate the air filter element from 2007 original place (Rh tool box) to the air filter box itself? I need another air filter element tipe,  but I dont know if this change willl pledge the normal motor work.

When I put on a conical airfilter I completely removed the stock airbox assembly. I fabricated a small metal shelf behind the sidecover and have strapped my 'real' tool kit to that.

Really? I need a pic of this. So the airbox is gone now? I'm looking at a picture of an 07 now and I still see the airbox.

My air filter is in the RHS cover. My Electra X has 2  'sausages'. The left one is empty and useless and the right hand 'sausage' has the tool roll behind it.

The airbox that was originally the filter housing is now just a sort of collector box through which the air travels from a convoluted pipe that does a 90* turn from the actual circular air filter seen in the pic below. To the front of the airfilter/tool box low down behind the gearbox can be seen the black feed pipe for air!



This other pic  below shows clearly the air feed pipe. Also, in the top forward area of the 'tool box' (ie rhs in pic) you can see what appears to be a hole from a missing bolt. Actually, that is a vent pipe attachment that comes from the breather catch can on the other side of the bike and is used to recycle and burn the fumes emitted. If you find oil dribbling out of it onto your air filter your catch can is probably full up!!!!!

You could put a K&N Filter directly onto the carb.  However you would have to remove the air filter box and leave it off to do this.  My 2005 Military model only has the air filter in the air filter box.  I'm not sure if it would work but you could try to retrofit the 05 air filter assembly onto your 07 to gain your toolbox back as well.

Just click on which shape you like then pick out the size and you can buy it direct from the manufacturer.  I've used these filters on many of my vehicles and found them to be the best filters out there for performance.  Also with routine maintenance these filters will last almost forever.

I'm not positive, but I thought that the air filter in the toolbox thing was something that was being done on European models, not U.S. ones.  Still, I wonder what the reason is.  I assume it's based on some regulation - maybe the filter required doesn't fit in the actual airbox?  Makes no sense to me...

I live in the UK so you'd be right that this is a European Army 500ES but not sure if US models are 'old school' or this version in the airbox dept?

I would have thought it might done like this as that circular filter in the toolbox is very easy to check visually so perhaps gets forgotten less and can also be changed with the removal of just the one bolt so easy too. Another consideration might be that the filtration area is surely larger than the original size one. No more dirty filters!
Yet another possibility might be induction noise for emissions is quieter like this etc? Who knows, but take your pick! 

PS. By turning that rubber intake nozzle it is possible to have it facing forward over the top of the gear box. Used for ram air effect at speed ha ha

I have two large army panniers, but still keep tools in this tool roll attached to the solo saddle.
Looks good (IMHO) and works well!!!
