Hi,
I went to replace my speedo illumination bulb over the weekend. (It turned out that I don't have the correct replacement bulb but that's a different story...). From the perspective of sitting on the bike I reached in behind the headlight and from the front of the gas tank, on the right side. The illumination bulb/socket was accessible without having to go in from the front of the headlight and fighting with all those wires.

Anyway, this morning the bike would not start. This just doesn't happen so I'm sure I must have knocked something loose when I was messing around with the bulb. It's just like I have the kill switch engaged - but of course I don't.

What wires/connections are up under there that I could have fudged up to make it not start?

Thanks,
Matt

My speedo light AND neutral light recently went out.  I don't ride at night and I can figure out when I'm in neutral, so...

Anyway- my guess is you pulled / loosened a wire to the ignition switch.

We both may need to open up the front, unless you can train a 3yo to get in there with tiny hands.

On my 08 Military AVL a white plastic connector came apart and I got the same symptoms.
If I remember correctly it was on the left side up under the casquette.  The little ears that
hold the connector together would not stay spread apart far enough to latch.  I jammed a wooden matchstick, shaved down to fit, under the latching ear and have had no further trouble.
Good Luck.

You might have loosened the lead for the ammeter.   Everything runs through that thing.

I replaced my bulbs with LEDS from this list...

Work great and won't burn out.  You can also see the indicators in sunlight with the LEDS..

I sat on a stool,  took off the headlamp and used needle nose pliers to grab the bulb bases.

Now THERE is an OFFICIAL Royal Enfield fix if ever I've heard of one! Hahaha!! I did nearly the same trick (I cut down a bondo spreader .....) on the tail light bulb of the old Nissan truck. It'd jiggle loose about once a month 'til I "engineered" it. It has been good now for over a year.
Spare the pig iron - spoil the part!

No, unforunately not.

I'm hoping to get it into the shop this weekend.

Check the fuse, that's what mine was.  Don't know how I blew a fuse just changing a bulb, but that's what happened.

The one coming off of the positive lead from the battery.   Actually I was replacing my headlight bulb.  I unplugged the bad bulb and plugged in the new one and somehow blew a fuse.

Well, if it *is* the fuse then it'll be easy for the mechanic (The highly competent and even well-known Earl) to fix!  I put it in the shop (90 miles away) on Saturday. Needed new tires put on and timing gears (backlash) checked anyway. I'm giving it the royal tune-up treatment for it's Winter hibernation. Of course, with new tires I'll HAVE to take it out a couple of times before I tuck it in for the Winter!

Hope you get yours working jonusb!

Matt

Well, here's an update on the 'Speedo Bulb and Wires".

1st, Kruiser you were right it was only the fuse. I would have checked that myself if I hadn't dropped it off at the dealers *before* your post.

I had new tires put on - the Super Venom replacements - can't think of their name right now...

Earl is fixing my starter switch which I bypassed several month ago.

He gave it a full tune-up including the timing gears.

Now for the ugly. The sprague clutch was ready to go and my idler gear was missing a tooth. So I'm biting the Bullet (ahem...) and having a new one installed.

Also adding to the bill ( $$$ ) is that on my solo set-up the rear trials bracket on the stock fender stress fractured completely apart and needs to be repaired. It's the 2nd time it's happened but in different places. If a trials fender bracket doesn't hold up to straight street riding then it ain't much of a trials fender. I dunno, maybe the Brits do trials over marshmallows and rose petals and other fluffy stuff...

Anyway, enough $$$ is going into this thing that Frankenstein is going to become a more ridden machine whether it likes it or not.

Matt
