That makes so many good points.

They say knowledge is power and it perfectly illustrates what is going to happen when you are some poor sap in the omni-database, as opposed to being the PIA who operates it and plays around with you as a cat would with a mouse.

Plenty of our politicians wouldn't get this at all. They would just think it splendid and scratch their heads that anybody could see a problem with it.

Funny, and I mean both kinds. This reminds me of a short film that came out when ATMs were new. A guy puts his card in, and the machine starts asking him what he did with the last $40, and how did he buy the new watch without approval. The machine starts to gets jealous when he suspects he needs money for a date.

I'd would be really caught off guard with something like this, I mean who ever gets more than a few grunts on the other end of the phone from their local pizza joint. Wow, that kind of command of the language? I'd be stunned.

The key point made is that we are heading for a world where a ludicrous amount of information about you is shared unnecessarily with even the lowest level of authority holding employee.

And they haven't earned or been given any authority over you. It just arises from them being seated in front of the ultra-database - and you're not.

We don't have to vote for this situation for it to come into being. It happens automatically because it is intrinsic to on-line  database technology - just like pornography proved to be almost intrinsic to video and stills photography and we were "blessed" with it the moment the camera was invented, without there being any original intent to bring it about.

I hear ya!. I got the point, it's just too depressing to contemplate- especially if we can't really do anything about it. Don't all emerging technologies have their good and bad applications? We all benefit from the energy producing reactions of fission, but we sure hate the kowtowing to potentially weaponized regimes on the other end. On a smaller note, I example refuse to get one of those EZ Pass transponders that would allow me to go through toll roads without stopping. I don't want to be tracked that much, and I don't think we should get disconnected such that we forget how much we are paying each time. However, the convenience would be nice for those summertime New Hampshire tolls.........

Well if you don't have a points based ignition vehicle you may be in trouble soon.  Technology is being developed for law enforcement to kill your engine so you can't flee.  Point based ignition will be untouched.  Thank the stars for Lucas points.  Will.

Yikes! Seriously? Can't even find the spark plugs in my subaru ;)

Makes me want to watch Lee Majors in The Last Chase again. Not a great movie, but it's more upbeat than Brazil, which we are closing in on every day.

  BINGO!!!

They know your driving habits, normal routine, where you go at any given time.  They can even tell when you have a service due.  Can they shut you off of need be.  I think you get the picture.  And we haven't even seen the more updated version yet, all you guys that want all that high speed..low drag equipment (GPS etc.) have a tail wherever you go already.  Will.

In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the overload of information is so great it will be of little use to those who might be tempted to use it.  I think we're safe enough.

The problem I see with someone else shutting down the ignition is that might well place us in a difficult situation, safety wise.

Well, porn is intrinsic to any kind of technology, mechanical or not. Think of all those fleshy pink nudes hanging on the walls of the British Museum, the dionysian ecstasies that animate Grecian vases, the curvacious statues lying in wait at the Jardin des Tuilleries. Porn is everywhere, and it is watching us.

Agreed that it would/could/may cause safety issues may/may not be at the fore front of thought at the time.  Yes the sytem is overloaded with meaningful/less information and that factor alone should keep us safe for a while.  Let's face it, big brother already knows what he wants to know.  It all depends on what springs them into using the compiled data.  Will.

Yep, I would rather shake the Lucas dice when I pull out to overtake (something slow) than be exposed to the possibility of a law enforcement officer punching my ID number into his stop-o-matic box by mistake.

poutineyum: my second post in this thread looks like I am lecturing you. It is actually worse than that as I was sounding off some more without even reading the next person's post properly - which is very bad etiquette. My apologies. Mrs Chasfield had given me a glass of wine, so alcohol is to blame.
