  • 2003 ES 500... 38,416 miles, I'm done
on: June 12, 2009, 01:50:25 am
I spent 2 days riding the state roads in a 75 mile radius of Cookeville; about an hour East of Nashville. The trip started on a bad note with the need to replace a tire on the trusty Lumina just a couple of miles North of Nashville. I lost an hour and a half but what the heck; it only made my 7 hour drive into  8 1/2 hours....
My buddy who was riding up from Atlanta was running behind as well; something about his wife having the map blown out of her hands and then wanting to stop at every exit...    we checked into the rooms about 5 and decided that it would be better to ride in the morning since we were already sitting in the lounge...
Day 1 of riding had us going East and North; almost 300 miles of the best roads that I have ever ridden. Hills and twisties with a few short jaunts on a 4 lane to get to the next state highway. There is nuthing like a hot tub and a few beers after a day like that.
Day 2 we headed South, West, and North for another 250 miles... the curves were a little faster and I enjoyed them more than the hairpins of day 1.
To tell you the truth; I'm surprised that I didn't have a rod exit the cases!!  That bike has never been pushed and abused like that. I repeatedly over rev-ed 3rd gear on more than one occasion. It didn't take long to remind me how weak the brakes really are...  the 30mm Flat-side really gave me the power that I needed. I found that if I went into an uphill with at least 45mph that I could STILL accelerate on the uphill! I also completed my 1,000 mile gas survey and found that my average was 51MPG with that carb. I'm thinking that it may actually be a little better cause the 2nd 500 mile was this trip. Yea, I went thru a lot of oil but I was pushing it harder than I ever have. I think we've established that long hard riding may increase oil loss...
Sorry I'm  missing  the Minn. Rally for this but I think it was worth it.
(then again; if cj is buying the beer up there...)

Sounds like a dose of heaven Mike.
Should you decide to put some more miles on that jewel there will be a beer or two waiting for ya.

Looks like a couple days of great riding and I'm jealous.  I was going to ride the curve here in Kansas today but it was closed for maintenance.

Sorry I missed ya!  We've got some great roads for motorcycling in this area. Lots of open country and twisties or straights to match any level of difficulty desired.  I wish I had seen you, it's always a treat to run into other Bulleteers.  There aren't but a couple around here.
