Scotty -

Sorry I missed your question of a couple of days ago...

I kept the stock airbox, went to a vintage muffler from JC Whitney... good price and nice sound, BTW.  If it works, here's the link:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10111/s-10101/p-100000149269/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000149269/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000149269

I'm running the Micarb 28mm, 27.5 pilot, 130 main, needle on the lowest notch.

Difference is amazing !

Mike,

I am curious, how did you mount that?

Thanks,

The muffler?

I purchased (from JC Whitney) a 1 7/8 inch clamp for the exhaust end (item ZX021131P), and a 3 inch clamp (item ZX011105N) that I placed half-way down the can.  A metal strap about 6 inches long goes from the clamp straight up to the attachment point for the OEM muffler.  Only a fifteen minute engineering job - cut the strap to approximate length, "massaged" a bend in it to make it line up with the muffler clamp, drilled three holes for the bolts and painted it gloss black.

I'll get some pics over the weekend and put them up on Monday.

Hey Mike,
Is that muffler a straight through glasspak or does it have metal baffles in it?

It has metal baffles.  Nice thump, not at all obnoxious.

Well, I tried a lot of things to get my top end speed up and thanks for all the advice everyone. However to no avail did anything seem to work. I took the bike camping last weekend from Phoenix to Chevelon lake, AZ and it kinda really dragged down my mood as she barely pulled my load of camping gear up the mountains to 7,000ft at 25 mph. I really began to wonder why i loved a bike so much if she was only beauty and no brains...

But love gets a second chance! Last night I rebuilt the carb and discovered that yes indeed the CV carb does have an adjustable needle. take that EPA. So reset that needle I did. having before just putted around before at low speeds. i went around the corner and gunned it. I nearly lost control when she took off like a bandit! then I drove to my favorite mountain that prior she only pulled 30mph up and got her running up over 60! DAMN... all this time she just needed set one notch lower on the jet needle.

May i say my love for the Royal Enfield is restored!

I just dropped a leaner needle jet in my Mikuni TM32 and it feels much better. I need to do some chops to see if I am too lean, but it almost felt like as much of an increase as when I put the Minuni on. I think I am still rich on the main and have a leaner main coming, then I will check my top speed.

I did the break in fluid changes at 300 mi and no big difference but at nearly 500 mi. it was like a switch flipped and the bike opened up. Kinda freaky, but don't rush the 'run in'.
I just got a new Bullet 500, 2008 with the AVL engine. I have put 120 mile on it and things seems to tightening up and moving quicker. I am loving the bike so far but have some dissmy.

The bike will get going up to about 40mph in fourth gear. that is when it decides to go not faster whether I shift into 5th gear or not. I have tried to run the RPMs a little bit higher before shifting to to avail she just wont break 44mph at the maximum. I know for a 500 this cannot be right, can it? any suggestion or areas i might want to look into. I am definitley feeling stuck in town for the meantime, sigh... and thanks.

A bigger front sprocket will smooth out the high end speed. I put a 19 tooth on mine. I had to do alittle grinding and drilling to get the shift linkage out of the way. Out here in western states it would take forever to get anywhere at 55mph.

Air air cleaner, 25 pilot/127.5 main/needle all the way up/60's exhaust.  Went back to stock needle jet from P02.  With trailer 75 mph, haven't tried it without.  So probably right at 70.  Probably squeeze 80 w/o trailer but now back off since I don't want a hole shot piston, and handling got real tense at 75.  Will.
