This is what I was thinking as far as breaking in my C-5 when I get it

0-300 miles - 30-40 MPH
300-600 miles - 40-50 MPH
600-900 miles - 50-60 MPH
900-1200 miles 60- 70 MPH
1200-1500 miles 70- top MPH (not for long periods at the top just get there and back down)

Changing the oil every 300 miles (or is that overkill)

Any other suggestions would be appreciated......

A very methodical and patient break-in you have planned. I would make your first oil change at 100 mi and if 300 sounds good to you after the first 100 then do it! I would be surprised if the UCE requires that long and thorough of a break-in, but if it gives you piece of mind it's worth it.

It will be very interesting to see the reports on this forum from different riders on how they go about breaking in their new models. So this means your break-in routine will be very useful to others down the road. Be sure to keep a log.

Good luck Spliznat

I have just completed 209 miles on my G5, which has same engine as C5 (UCE, Efi) and I agree with Blltrdr.  Change the first oil early.  I have posted pictures of my first oil change at 200 miles on the thread "Efi now in the hands of a Brit" because the oil change issue had come there.  Also a couple of pictures are in the photo gallery.

I will do next oil change at about 500 miles.  The engine is definitely more robust and seems to want to go faster.  But I will keep it under 55 mph until after the second oil change.  Important thing is to vary the speed and run for short periods.  You may be interested in another thread "G5 on the road of NJ".

Thanks guys...........I was not sure if it would be overkill or not. just trying to play it safe and do the break in right. I will add a 100 mile oil change to the list.

Is the 100 mile oil change recommended for the AVL's also?  I've read conflicting arguments, some saying there's a benefit to wait til 300, or maybe just that it's not necessary to do one earlier.

I got an electra AVL a week ago and I'm at 93 miles right now.  Also, recommendations about getting a shop to do the first oil change or doing it yourself?  (already researched what all it entails, so no need to talk me through the steps)

Thanks~

Eh, would not hurt.  Never hurts to get the factory machining crud out of the system as quick as you can.

cool, good to hear it won't damage anything- not sure why i thought it might... either way, i don't have my fuel filter kits yet so i'll get my dealer to ship that then change it when it gets here...  probably a week which'll put me at probably 200 miles.

Part of a regulated break-in is designed for you to become familiar with the motorcycle before you do something stupid (assuming you ever do such a thing, heh!).

The iron-barrel and AVL do require a more careful break-in period.  The UCE is not nearly so fragile and prone to seizures and broken bits.  But you don't want to (as some say) ride it like you stole it.

I changed oil at 300 and 750 miles on the C5.  There wasn't much on the magnetic plugs as I thought, less than I got on the Buell XB9S.  It's a good motor, this UCE.

There are instructions in the manual for speed. Jack it up 5mph and you'll be better off, 35-40, 45-50, 55-60, and vary your throttle.

Cool,

I've got just under 100 miles on it now and recently found an all-rural/suburban (no freeways) route to work which i'm dying to try out.  (i live in baltimore, MD and work right outside of washington DC)  It's about a 40 mile ride each way, and although the posted speed limits don't exceed 35 mph, it's more comfortable with the little traffic there is to sometimes push it to 45.  I drove most of the route last night in my car and it seems like a good ride....

so is your recommendation to add 5 mph to the break-in limits just for the UCE, or will that be safe for my Electra AVL as well?

It really isn't speed but RPM's that you need to watch out for. Gradually increasing heat cycle is the aim, so that you progressively increase the expansion and contraction of the different metals in the engine. The speed is a rough estimate of keeping it within bounds. And I'd agree 100 mile oil change will get a lot of the crud out since most of it is generated right away.

Thump is right in that its more about heat.

My understanding is that the IBs and AVLs have a pretty rough hone on the barrel and you are working on seating in the rings.  Until the rings a fully seat and can transfer heat fully the piston runs a chance of overheating and causing troubles.

Well,  it sounds good in my head anyway.....

Ok, I don't have the oil filter kit yet, so what do you guys think of this:

Do an oil change this weekend, but don't swap out the filter yet (since I don't have a spare).

Is there a way to clean out an oil filter, or should i just leave it in and do nothing to it?

Then at 300 miles get it fully serviced by a shop? I want to do as much maintenance on my own as possible, but it is under warranty and it seems to be recommended to take your bike to a shop, either at 300 or 500 mi.

thanks!

If you have an AVL, you're in the wrong forum!! They're apples and oranges.

I've read through this guy's website and am wondering if it would be true to "run it like ya stole it" to break in a new C5. Seems to make sense to me.

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Its still under warranty after all.

One thing I see that might cause issues is catastrophic failure and the physical pain to ones body if that happens, not to mention the damage to the bike. I took out three ribs and removed a few large patches of skin over the summer dropping the bike at highway speed, I don't want to do that again.... but the pills from the doctor made me see pretty colours and other hallucinations.
