degree wheels are pretty easy to find. Expect to pay $30 to $50 or so. The 0.8 mm before tdc is hardly hit & miss; it just requires some precision in measurement. That's been pretty much a standard way of setting static timing for as long as I can remember, and that's a long time.
Agreed, though, that a timing mark on the alternator would be better for checking timing at full advance where it really matters.
