     The first EFI unit is coming out of the crate right now. What a great job of melding the old with the new.  Test ride and more impressions coming in about  6 shop hours.

Great!  But why is it snowing in Seattle today? 

Is the G5 frame the same as the Electra?  Will accessories for the Electra fit on the G5?

     IT LIVES!!!! Had it running on the bench. SWEET! For those of you who doubted, it IS a Royal Enfield. The feel would be familiar to all of you. As for the sound: It's quiet, but it sounds like an exceptionally well tuned Enfield. Throttle response is crisp.
     Just as I was ready to ride it started hailing, then sleeting. SIGH! I'll post test ride results ASAP, but it might be next week if the weather does not cooperate.

I stopped by Vince's just after the guys got it put together.  I looks real sweet.  Did not get a chance to hear it running, bummer.  I agree with Vince they did a great job of melting the old with the new.

     Short ride between storms!  WOW!!! This has POWER and tremendous throttle response. Acceleration was awesome. The engine was smooth. It felt race prepped, yet it felt like an Enfield.
     I have some riding to do!!!!!!!

Sounds like Vince might be keeping #1 for himself.
My thoughts the first time on one pretty well paralleled Vince's.
Felt just like my old iron barrel after the first few thousand dollars of improvements were made. LOL

     Exactly right. , t120. What a great job they did. It has all the thousands of $ improvements in a factory package. Taking that into consideration it is a real deal.
     As for keeping the first one.... Part of my (pleasurable) duties as a dealer is to ride my products. I must become familiar with them. I must shake them down for issues prior to sale. And in the case of the RE I must put some miles on each unit as part of the factory directed quality control. I often have to put miles on customer bikes to test jetting changes or other modifications or issues. So I get lots of ride time on a wide variety of bikes.from dirt to cruiser to tour to sport.
     I really haven't felt the need to buy very many bikes for a long time. I already get to ride all I want. That's what I get for having my own store. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. It's my cross to bear.
     I do really love the RE. If I didn't have the store this IS the bike I would buy. Out of all the bikes I have ridden this is hands down the most fun.

But my '08 AVL Classic is soooo good. Wonder what that red and white paint would cost? And then have someone strip it and slop it on.  ::)

But dont think the only dealer in New Mexico willl be certified to sell them. Too bad, looks like I will have to ship one in.

Due to back surgerys I have to have a heel toe shifter (or right side shift) I have looked everywhere, i can think of and have never seen a picture of the left side of the new bike ,so I could determine if i could build a heel /toe shifter. I can't send pics but i can see them if someone would be so kind as to post a good closeup of the left side ,showing the foot peg and shifter. I had a 2001 last year was able to ride it with the right side shift kit ,traded it for a street legal dirt bike . I hope to be able to get one of the new ones.  thank you all

I put that C5 picture as my desktop and after looking at it for awhile decided I really don't like that rear fender overhang.  It just doesn't look right to me.  I guess the G5 is more to my liking.

I  think the gap between the rear fender and the tire would close up quite a bit when the bike is off the center stand.

To me it kinda looks like they used 18" wheels in 19" fenders front and back.
Looked better with a black background.

Thanks for the pictures the red one one the white background comes so large (4 times bigger than my screen) I can't see the whole bike without scrolling around (and i don't know how to change itI don't know much about "puters" I,m old don't you see) ,but i can see the shifter and it would not be very hard to build a heel/toe shifter. My left foot falls due to one of my back surgery's, i can push down with my toe and my heel but i can't pull my toe up ,makes me walk funny also.   Thanks again all.   Ernie

To me the C5 body, ignoring the paint, looks more like a classic than the G5 classic does, which I prefer. I am less excited about the G5 because it looks so much like the Electra. The tool boxes, the gaiters, the lack of saddle bag supports, the lack of supports for the front fender.

There will be no mistaking my iron barrel classic for a G5 classic. Who am I kidding? Normal people don't notice any of these things.

      We have been getting little sun breaks today, so my guys got to ride the new bikes. Saturday they were mad because I got to ride and they did not. Today was their turn. Now they are back in the service department fist fighting over who gets to to do the 30 mile shake down ride that Enfield wants the dealers to do.  I'm surprised they came back in. Lucky for me it is pretty cold and they did not have all there gear. They would still be riding.

     Finally got in a 5 mile ride!!! It really does feel like a kitted RE. I kept it less than 1/2 throttle and 40 MPH as per the book. At 40 in 5th it did not feel very good. It vibrated and  throttle response was not that satisfactory. I dropped down into 4th and things were great. As an experiment I ran up to 45 for a moment and shifted to 5th. It was smooth and powerful there. I think the hardest part of break-in will be riding that fine line between lugging and sweet spot.
     The transmission is even better than before. I found neutral at a dead stop every time!
     My biggest complaint is the mirrors. They are too short and are at a funny angle. The old black ones are much better.
     The weather report is favorable for the next couple of days. I get to ride after work tonight.
     If I didn't already own the store I would have to buy one of these!.

     Another 15 miles! It just keeps getting better and better. The engine is already starting to smooth out and revving more freely. I am really down to nit-picking. I mentioned the mirrors. I also think I would like the shift pedal to be 1/2 to 3/4 inch longer. I have an average size foot and with my boots on I have to bend my ankle a surprising amount to get under the pedal for an up shift. Raising the pedal more would necessitate lifting my foot off the peg for a down shift.
     Compared to previous Enfields this is in a different league. They have entered the majors with this bike.
     The class of mid displacement bikes this would compete with include the Suzuki Savage /S40 Boulevard 650 and GS500, The Yamaha XV250 and 650, the Kawasaki EX250 and 500 and the EN 500, the Honda VT600 Shadow and Rebel 250, and the Hyosung GV250. All these bikes have a mix of power, comfort, and utility that would appeal to most people for their usualy transportation and fun riding needs.
     The new Enfield EFI has it's own mix of these qualities plus almost unlimited customization options and a fun factor that can't be beat.

Don't forget looks; the Enfield's got 'em in spades.  Ha!  That's what the other companies get for abandoning British styling.  They'll all get you from point A to point B the fun way, but only the Bullet will catch the eyes of passers-by.

No doubt about the looks issue, and as a HD owner, I'm well aware of what looks often cost.

But, and I do have to play a little devil's advocate here, there is always the cost factor.  Even though My AVI Electra is a fine bike, and I believe the UCE is even better, and I may well trade my AVI for a G5 to tug the sidecar, the Suzi 650 can be bought new for $4000.00 (maybe a tad less), and that really gives me some pause.

I understand the reasons for this situation, I truly do, I just wish it wasn't that way.  I prefer the RE's classic looks, no doubt, but the Suzi is a wonderful bike, extremely comfortable, the engine has been around a loong time, and there's always that big price differential.   

As far as looks, there are some classic cues that can be done to the S40, and       besides, most of us do stuff to our REs, too.

My wife rides a Suzuki S40, it's a really great bike,  I've rode it quite a lot and really like it.  All that said, I'm selling my Triumph Bonneville to buy a C5 when they are available.

I understand fully, there is NOTHING like an Enfield, just as there is NOTHING like a Harley Davidson, or anyone else's favorite brand, and those are valid points, always, in the purchase of a machine of any kind.  (For me, in some cases, there is nothing like a Honda, and nothing like a Kawasaki, and in those cases the cost factor is a big plus.)

I understand those emotional, mystique issues very well. I am very fond of my Enfield, and often wear my RE belt buckle, and when someone asks, I proudly give them the quick RE history.  I like the looks and questions when I'm on the hack. I'm just always perplexed by the question of what are those things worth ?

Is a Screaming Eagle Electra Glide 110 inch worth 12,000 to 14,000 dollars more out the door than a Gold Wing 112 inch?  Not for me, I have a GL 1800. 

Was a new Harley XL 1200 Custom worth more than a new, heavily discounted Honda VTX 1800?  I guess so, I bought one.

And I bought a RE instead of a Suzi. 

I just have for decades wondered, are the subjective factors worth more than the objective ones, and if so, how much more?  Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not.

I do know that there is an occasional guy on an Electra Glide that's stock, or a stage one, that cost the same as, or a little more than my GL,  but who doesn't understand some objective factors about the difference between my bike and his. 

He gooses it at a light while I'm beside him on my Wing, and well, as the old saying goes, "when the clutch drops, the Bull stops".  I just smoke him something fierce, and at that point the tradition, 106 years in business, bad boy image, etc., don't count, and the OBJECTIVE factor of pure performance becomes tremendously SUBJECTIVE, and a lot of fun for me. 

The Enfield is very cool, no doubt at all, but I know that a 650 Suzi would do a better job of tugging that sidecar around.  Like I've said before, how does one balance subjective against objective?  Subjectively, I guess.

      Alaroyal, you are right. It is subjective. I have been in this business for 35 years and I have never had someone buy a bike for an objective need. People buy a bike they want. Someone may convince himself of a need, but it all started with desire. We wind up married for the same reason!
     I have actually come to realize that I am NOT in the motorcycle business. I don't compete with other motorcycle stores. I compete with the movie-plex, Nintendo, ski slopes,  and even Disney Land. I don't sell motorcycles. I provide an outlet for people that want fun or a hobby or a platform for self expression.
     Riding and racing and wrenching on motorcycles has shaped my life. It is great to be able to share this with the like minded folks that come  to visit me.

Brothers and Sisters:

Colin Cameron, a fellow motorcycle enthusiast, and I made the two-hour trip from Atlanta, GA to Westminster, SC this past Tuesday in search of the red, G5 Deluxe that had been spotted at Richard Evans’ shop – R&D Enfield.  Colin and Richard have known each other for some years through the Greater Atlanta British Motorcycle Association (GABMA).  Richard and I met for the first time this past week.  I will, of course, share with you my first impressions of the G5 in the next paragraphs.  However, the trip would have been worthwhile even if the objective had been just to meet Richard, have lunch with him and Colin and simply talk RE motorcycles!  In other words, the G5 experience was memorable but it pales in comparison with the time Colin and I spent with Richard Evans!

The G5, as Brother Kevin has noted in this forum, is the UCE in an Electra frame with a modified swing arm.  Correct?  Well, with all due respect, that description does not quite begin to cover the true meaning and beauty of this new product offering!  The Electra looks quickly evaporate due to the Magic Dust that covers this stunning motorcycle.  The dusting starts with the new, beefy chromed front (dare I say?) mudguard; it undoubtedly follows with the beautiful UCE power plant; it continues with what appears to be a less busy, modified swing arm; and, it ends with the chromed rear mudguard.  I can safely state that for those of us who like the chromed fender looks of a British motorcycle the decision to purchase a G5 or a C5 will not be an easy one.  Again, up close and personal, the G5 does not readily (or actually) remind even the informed observer of the Electra.

The pictures we have seen of the new UCE power plant do not really illustrate its quality or beauty.  I knelt in front (and both sides) of this new engine for a significant amount of time.  (I knew this because my arthritic knees protested as I tried to get myself back on my feet.  And, no, I did not say any prayers or made any offerings to the UCE gods while I was on my knees!)  Well, going back to the pictures, the quality and the finish of the castings of the engine covers are what we have seen and more.  But, the pictures do not show the quality of the finish of the engine and the barrel fins.  The fit and finish of these components are equal to those of the Hinckley Bonneville or the W650.  (Period.)  The muffler… well, there are those who like the super-sized original can… and, for some reason, it is not an eyesore on the G5… but, as in all else in life, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.  The Deluxe G5 in her British Post (Office) Red looks gorgeous in spite of the length of the stock muffler.

Of course, I was not the only one admiring the G5.  Colin asked a lot of good questions.  Richard very graciously and proudly answered the questions, as he explained everything about the new engine and the new technologies used on it.  You could tell that Richard paid a lot of attention during the EFI classes held in Faribault, MN.  And, since he, by then, knew of Perla (my 2004 Sixty-5), he gave Colin and me a lot of comparisons between the old and the new RE technologies.  Professor Evans put on quite a seminar.  This new friend knows his beans!  Colin also took a lot of pictures (on film) of the G5 and of us, which he gave to me on Wednesday.  (I was going to scan them and add them to this report; however, the friend who owns the scanner is having problems with it; and, since I did not want to delay this report any longer, I decided to post it without the pictures.)

Richard took a telephone call.  After that break, I showed him the 14 pictures of Perla I recently placed in the Gallery – he was very complimentary of my bike!  Our focus returned to the G5 and our host went through the starting procedure and fired up the bike.  The obvious question is: What are the sounds of the UCE like?  My response is: What sounds?  This is to say that the UCE, unlike the shakes (rattles and rolls) and the metallic sounds we associate to our current REs, is a very smooth and quiet running motor!  How’s the exhaust note?  Well, on this point, we go back to the true sound of an RE in stock form, of course.  Our Forum host has related how the engineers in India toiled to get that familiar RE sound out of the UCE.  I believe their efforts met with success.  Once opened up, as we typically run our current bikes, I am quite confident that the UCE is going to have the same sound (and the corresponding gains in performance) we are used to hear (and feel) out of our favorite marque of bikes!

What were we hungry for?  The three of us walked to the best burger joint in town and our buddy Colin treated Richard and me to lunch.  Did we talk about the weather, politics and religion?  Well, we did for literally a few minutes!  Our conversation quickly and happily returned to the G5 and its UCE.  Richard took Colin and me through the extensive and precise PDI process that REM and CMW have outlined for the dealers.  There are quality control check points in the PDI process and in the break-in period.  This “game changer” of a product, as Kevin calls it, does take quality control practices from concepts to realities!  Are you guys ready?  Yes sir.  Let’s get back to the store.  Roger that, Boss! 

As we got back, Richard took the key out his pocket and said: “You’re gonna have the privilege of riding a G5 with 30 miles on the clock.”  It didn’t take me very long to get my riding gear out my Element or on me!  The Boss pointed me to a very quiet section of town that is visible from his shop and, after the warm-up period, I smoothly rolled out of the parking lot for about a five-minute ride at a maximum of 45 MPH at any one point.  Well, my friends, in closing… just kidding!  My one-word evaluation, as expressed to my buddies once I returned to the store, was: “WOWZAA!!!”  Firstly, the pull of the clutch lever is lighter than the one on my 2005 Bonneville!  Secondly, the transmission is as smooth and as precise as any tranny you have ever shifted in your riding experiences, my friends!  Thirdly, the UCE is truly a 21st century Royal Enfield engine!  Fourthly, I do believe there is some real Magic Dust in the “so called” modified swing arm because the handling of the G5 is outstanding!  So, there you have it… this is my story… and, I’m sticking to it.  (Period.)

In closing, Colin Cameron and I had an absolute ball as we drove to and from Westminster, SC.  We sandwiched the round trip with the memorable time we spent with Richard Evans and the G5, its UCE and all else this new bike offers us RE riders.  As we left, I said to Richard something like this: When to buy a new RE is in question… knowing where to buy the new RE is not at all in question!

Oh yeah, Brother Ace, along with Brothers Colin and Richard and that G5 Redhead, I had a wonderful time!  Ace, as far as the description of the bike goes, I can only echo the words from Brother Ice: "WOWZAA!! may in fact be an understatement."

"What are your" (my) "observations about the G5 vs the new Bonneville, considering that you've ridden both?"   Well, my friend, I had the "privilege of riding a G5 with 30 miles on the clock" but, for all the right reasons, at about 40 MPH for 5, or so, minutes.  My test ride, quite frankly, was insufficient to give you a comparison of any significance.  One of the observation exceptions that I can advance is that the handling of the bike with that "so called" modified swing arm makes the G5 float in comparison to that of the Bonneville!

I must admit, my curmudgeonly, head-in-the-sand, miserable-old-man-style reluctance to accept anything new in motorcycling is softening somewhat, particularly, after PJ's write up. I think I could get along quite nicely with one of these UCE machines.

What a write-up Cabo.

It made me get out on my '02 ES tonight and go for a ride after work and try to forget about the new bike. When the nearest dealer gets them in, I'll have to go see them for myself (if I dare).

I'm happy with my old iron Bullet, but the new ones sound great, and still a Bullet!

As much as I already want the new one, I'll hopefully keep mine for years.

Cabo - You have an Element? I have an Element. And if you love your Iron Lung, I don't think you have to worry. Since RE built about 10 bizillion of them. I think parts availability won't ever be a problem.

     Cabo, with the reinforcing at the swing arm pivot handling would be enhanced. The bike will be a little more sure footed. I can't wait to get a set of Avon AM 26's on there.
     Paul, the engine is not counter balanced, but it is properly balanced for the RPM range that it will mostly run in.  In that range it is a joy. The vibration is not annoying or bothersome or even particularly noticeable. Above and below that sweet range there is some  vibration. Don't lug or over rev the engine and you will never notice it.
     Even with all the advancements the new Enfield is still an Enfield. It will appeal to a wider group than we now have, but it will still be a group that has some soulful connection to a piece of mechanical art. The only people that will complain about vibration or ride will be the riders that should be on a HonaYamaZuki 2800 cruiser complete with a holder for his latte.

Brother Vince, I thank you for confirming my impression of the enhanced handling of the G5.  Perla, who is a terrific dancing partner, may frown a bit when she learns that the G5 is una prima bellerina!   Well, on second thought, I might keep this fact under my helmet... what Perla doesn't know can't hurt her!   ;)

     Even though The UCE is rated for freeway use, I would not ride ANY new bike on the freeway until it is thoroughly broken in. It will  be at least 1000 miles before I take it at those speeds. I did not even feel comfortable with my 10 second foray to 45MPH to check engine feel.
     I always follow the book on break in and do it nice and slow and gentle.This always rewards with smooth, powerful, good running, and low maintenance vehicles.
     Based on feel (backed by experience) I'm sure that it will do just fine on the freeway. BUT (here it comes) based on experience I would recommend limited freeway duty for ANY single cylinder engine. When I get a Suzuki Savage 650 or a Kawasaki KLR650 in the shop I can always tell which ones have spent a lot of time on the freeway. Those ones start to rattle and smoke by the time they approach 15 to 20 thousand miles. The limitation seems to be the single cylinder.
     I would not recommend a daily 20 mile freeway commute for any bike in this class. Use the ability when you need to, but avoid the super slab as much as possible. It would be the difference between a 25,000 mile and a 50,000 mile engine.

Welcome James - you seem to be the first on here to have ordered a C5. I viewed the C5 at my local dealer a couple of weeks ago - It does look good. I'd like to see the other colours but they have not been imported as yet. You can have any colour you want - as long as it's black  ;D

I bought the C5 from GV Bikes in Taunton, Somerset. I'm actually closer to Torre Motorcycles but they have none on order at the moment (but can order them for you). I got a call from GV and decided to pop by to "have a look"

What can I say my self control sucks, but I don't think I'll be disappointed, it's a stunning bike and peoples reactions to the UCE are pretty positive.

Once I get it to my place I'll take lots of pics, the ones on the official site don't do em justice.

My commute is about 25 miles one way, with the majority on 4-lane (but not Interstate).
I drive it nightly in my 90 Silverado at 55 MPH, and never feel the need to get out of anyones way, So the UCE should serve my purpose.

Hey all,

The bike is in my possession! Unfortunately I've been really busy the past week, I'm going to try to get some nice shots taken and may also record a video of her running if the street is quiet enough to let the sound get picked up nicely.

She's a beauty!
