When I last checked/adjusted the valve clearances, I needed a 2 x 4 and hammer to get the covers off.  Needless to say, the gaskets get munched up but I put it all back togeter with the aid of some liguid gasket.

My next check is coming up and I'm going to replace the gaskets after i scrape the old boogered up ones out.  What's the best route to take with the replacements; a little RTV silicone on one side and a little schmear of oil on the other?  A little oil on both sides as old Beemers do?

I use oil on both sides.
No leaks and no more ruined gaskets
Never underestimate the value of improved combustion efficiency and reducing parasitic engine and rolling chassis losses.

Wheel bearing grease on both sides.
