Hello, all!  I've been dying to own an Enfield for YEARS, but as a seminary student it just wasn't possible.  It's still not, but I'm going to make it happen anyway;  I just can't resist any longer.  I recently found a well-used but lovingly cared for 1999 Military for $2000.00, which I think is a great price, but it has over 10,000 miles.  I've always owned Japanese bikes, which are short on personality but very reliable;  this kind of mileage is nothing for one of them.  I was just wondering if I'm asking for trouble with this bike, or is that kind of mileage OK on a well-maintained unit?  And before anyone asks, I used to make my living as an auto mechanic, so I know how to spin a wrench and I'm not afraid of getting greasy;  the Bullet will be loved and cared for by me.  Thanks for any input, and God bless!

I already have a Bullet and if I ran across one locally that was only $2000 I would be hard pressed not to buy it, could probably talk em down a few 100.  But I think I am now a junky...

Brother Cadetalan, I echo Gary's sentiments and add: Godspeed!

The higher mileage can go either way.
It might have alot of wear, or it might just be broken-in well now.
It depends on the previous owner.

It's a good sign that it's gotten to the 10k mile mark without major problems, and this may be an indicator that it was one that went together well at the factory.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I just might hit 10,000 by the end of this month. ('06, sixty-5). No real problems and she just keeps getting better.  Do it!  ;)

C Alan,    Welcome

Classic Motor Works is very good with customer service, they are willing to go the extra mile with parts and service and even advise. That may help you to decide as well. Parts are typically less expensive than other bike brands.
You no doubt will be dealing with them if you buy this RE

I agree with Ace.  The high mileage could go either way, but my 350 (2004) has now done just over 10,000 miles with no problems.  Only things I have replaced are a front tyre (puncture), a horn bracket and chainguard (mountings cracked) and a spark plug.  Still on original cables, points, etc.  I have only had one breakdown and that was down to a loose connector, fixed at the side of the road in 2 minutes.  The bike now seems to run and pull better than ever. I do my own maintenance and take care over it.

There's no guarantee that your bike will be like this, but this is just to say that there are plenty of owners with that kind of mileage who still find their bikes reliable and a joy to start and ride. 10,000 miles, in itself, need not condemn a bike.  They will do much, much more than that.

Tom

Edited because I re-read it and realised I had missed out two words from one sentence.

May as well bite the Bullet.Maybe all the bugs r out of it.Mine was ok till about 600 mi.,next 600-1000 mi. was a lot of annoying surprizes. At 2300 or so it is a different machine.I don't think I'll ever really trust it,and I DON'T CARE.If it is 0k now it will likely be ok in another 10,000 mles.

Welcome to the group,
My 99 had over 18,000 miles on it when I set off to Missouri (from Detroit) on it. Never missed a beat all the way there and all the way back.
For it's 10th birthday with 21,000 miles on it I am giving it a top to bottom rebuild not so much because it needed it but I want to insure it lasting at least as long as I do.
After doing the gearbox and the motor the only thing I found that was worn were the cam spindles and I'd bet I could have gotten another 5 or 10 K out of them.
Yup, 99's are a mighty good year in my book.

My '99 just passed 13000 miles, I have never had a breakdown that prevented me from getting home.  Repairs thus far, two clutch cables, front fender stay, chain at 10000, headlight wire break at the steering head, sprocket bearing on the rear wheel, muffler bracket crack at 10000, metal swarf attaching itself to the rotor magnets caused the alternator to act up at 12000.  All easy fixes.  Mine still starts first or second kick.
