I bought a K/S pawl and spring as a spare just in case, how often do these need replacing, if ever?
They are so cheap its not money wasted in my view.
Best regards

The newer ones are improved, and last even longer than the old ones did.
I have the original pawl in my 2000 Bullet, and it gets kickstarted every time, because it's a kickstart-only bike.

If you have the bike tuned well, so that it doesn't do many kick-backs, then it's going to last a long time. But, it's good to have one on hand, just in case it did break. It can happen with a bad kick-back.
But honestly, when I was re-jetting my carb for the exhaust and air-filter change, i got some hellacious kick-backs because it was lean, and my pawl made it through that just fine.

This topic has me focused on my cold kickstarting. I was having a lot of trouble when cold. I built a dial gauge tdc tool and was able to kickstart this morning in 29 degrees. Now I just need to dial in my bikes kickstart process. Seems like it is:

decompress two kicks, enricher, and a little gas. I did get a kickback, but it wasn't too bad.
