Can anyone tell me how to get the ammeter out of the casquette?  Looks like it's a press fit from the top, but I'm not sure.

Yes it's a snug fit. It has a rubber flange between it and the hole.
wd-40 and patience, take your time

Ammeter's a nice thing to have even on a diesel :D
