Ok I have to change the headlight retainer ring for my 7" non lucas headlight.  What is the trick to removing and reinstalling the little retainer clips?  Those things wont budge for me.

Next, if someone can point (pun intended) me in the direct of good instructions on adjusting / checking points that would be great.   I am not familiar with working on points at all.

Thanx

Grab one side of the clip with a pair of needle nose pliers and bend it down and out from under the headlight ring holding on to it real well.  Do it in a place where you can find it if it gets away from you and wear some glasses. It's easy, you just have to do it a few times.

Points, just loosen the screw that holds the points in place and adjust it up or down to get the proper gap.
If you notice there are 2 tits on the points plate and a slot in the points and a screwdriver can be used to adjust it up and down.
Don't tighten the screw too hard or you will strip it.

Those *#**# clips! ;)

I used the winking smiley above because it looks like it only has one eye. Definitely want safety glasses for that job.

You do get the knack after a few tries with them. I keep a thumb on the middle of the "W" when I apply the pliers.

When I did mine on the bench I covered the unit with a towel, to catch them as they tried to attack me.

Thanx gang, this is why I love this forum.  Is putting them back in any easier?

That wasn't that terrible.  I do have some needle nose pliers that are extra long.  I think the extra leverage helped.

Thanx for the help gang.

Taking them out is as per above, needle nose pliers, safety glasses and the wife's best bath towel on the workbench.

Putting them back, you may want to open them up slightly to make the spring a tight fit. Space them evenly around the rim. It's one of those things that's easy when you know how. 8)
