For me it is actually after-last-winter project.  Just yesterday I tried to clean the valve covers from the white powdery crud but it seems the real problem is actually deeper.  It is these dark corrosion marks that apparently are much harder to remove.  Anyone has a good idea how to clean it without the need to remove the top 1/4" off the surface with a sand paper?

As the metal is marked it will need some fairly abrasive polishing to remove it.

Start with some 400 grade wet-and-dry and work up to finer grades.
