No need for the canister in the US except for CA.
Well, BMW sure likes them in all of NA, maybe even Europe, too.
The first time I saw a charcoal canister was on my 1997 BMW F650GS Funduro. It caused a vacuum to be built up in my fuel tank so that the engine would stop with a gallon left in the tank. After the dealer couldn't fix the problem, I removed the canister, defeated the air-injection system and called it a day.
The bike ran perfectly after that.
