Was doing some surfing earlier and came across BA standard tools.  I know whitworth and british standard are roughly equivalent in sizes, but am confused on the BA thingy. Ideas? ???

Being a Brit/ limey I should know this but alas I do not.

However ille bet you the B stands for British as is spelt with a capital letter as in British.

There was BSF and whitworth.   BSF is British Standard Fine and was common on motorcycles as the course Whitworth would vibrate loose.

There was also a cycle thread and a tapered pipe thread which is similar to yours.

This write up in Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Standard_Whitworth

gives BA as standing for British Association.

Wondering because I can pick up a set of these here in the US for next to dirt, but don't want to buy a set that I cannot use, thanks for the info.  Will continue to research this subject.

I was gonna say that based on my experience with 50's and 60's Triumphsm Beezers and Nortons, the BA stands for Bass Ackwards.  But we've got good British folk on the forum and I don't want to irritate anybody.  Boy, I sure miss the old Lucas electrics.

BWolf, best sockets you can buy (not brand but type) are 6 point metric.  They can accomodate other than name plate sizes without rounding and work with American sizes as well.  I don't think there's anything on your Bullet that's Whitworth.  It seems to be all metric.

Can agree with the bassackwards at times, but I definitely agree about the Prince of Darkness Electrics.  Spent my fair share of nights armed with flashlight trying to get my Norton/Triumph tp start after it died 10 miles from civilization.  Thats an experience.

newer Enfield's may be metric, but My early 99 is whitworth. $ 60 k in Snap on tools, and now a new set !!!  There are some metric's that will be "close enough"

13 mm usually get those 1/4 Whit nuts.

3/16 Whit. is the awkward one.
