Can anyone help me trace ownership of a '96 Bullet my son bought with no title/registration.  Can't register/license without documentation.

Assuming you live in the U.S.
Each State has its own requirements. You might ask your Department of Motor Vehicles if they can help trace the last known owner and then try to Title or apply forLost title.
Don't say anything about the motorcycle being made in India as it might raise an eyebrow to being smuggled in.

Thanks.  Bike originated in PA, now in TN.  Afraid this pursuit is a long work in progress.

The bikes have been imported legally since 1995. There are however Indian market bikes that have been smuggled into the country. You often times see them on Ebay labeled as a 1975 or some such thing. They are brutal to get registered legally. If you look on the front downtube and inside the RH tool box you will find the VIN number. If it is a proper legal bike it will have a 17 digit VIN starting with MBFF.

The importer at that time kept no records so finding out it's history is from that angle is impossible.
