I have developed a loud clicking noise from the rear wheel. I think the wheel bearings may have gone bad. Any one know the proper replacement. Not sure if it's the wheel bearing or the bearing in the hub, but the wheel does seem to be a bit wobbley

The only way I know of Ridge, is to take it apart and inspect/feel the bearings.
While doing that be sure to inspect all components as it comes apart.
Other than that how's your bike been since your original problem was solved?

Yep, the only way to tell for sure is to take off the hub and look inside.  When my hub bearing went out the spocket had about 3mm of lateral play.

Along with bearings, you may want to check the brake return springs, sometimes they can break while braking.  Also check the break anchor pin nut, mine vibrated loose at one time.

Thanks for the quick responses. The bike has been doing great since the new clutch and the switch to 20W50 in the primary. A regular 70 mpg daily commuter. Just recently (after installing a windshield) I started hearing this noise from the back end. Adjusted the slack out of the chain and thought that would take care of it. Nope, got worse. I set the centerstand up on a 2x6 so the rear wheel would be in the air and ran her up to 5th gear. CLINK CLINK CLINK and I swear the last time I saw that much side to side shaking it involved a scantily clad woman and a pole!

Wheel bearings do not click it is more likely a spoke.

I run a 05' Classic: I've noticed the same problem but only from the front. Usually here it when I go from 2nd to 3rd etc. Once in 4th/5th no clicking  :-\

Did check the spokes, but will do it again.

Any other ideas  ???

I checked the spokes and sure enough there was three or for a little loose. Although once tightened the rear end is still doing this wobbley thing

Well thats the awkward thing about spokes, they all need to be tight and pull the same amount other wise it will pull the wheel out of shape.

You need to jack up the wheel and remove the chain so the wheel spins freely then check the wheel for run out bu putting something-any thing close to the rim -not the tyre. A screw driver on a paint tin would do.

Here is the tricky part,-- where the wheel moves away you need to slacken or tighten accordingly. I suggest you search on google for a much more detailed information with diagrams.

Its not rocket science but tricky at first.

Tighten all of the spokes in 1/4 turn increments.  Then squeeze the "X" axis where the spokes cross in a hand grip.  Tap with a wrench, check for run out and repeat as necessary.

well, I managed to true up the wheel. It has about 1/32" variation and the click click is gone. mabey it was a cluck cluck and the feather bastage escaped! It feels 100% better than it did on the road but still has a fair amount of side to side movement with the rear wheel off the ground and spinning in 5th. Guess I'll just have to keep it on the ground!  ;)
