Looking for the next rebuild project....
07 RE Military Ironhead Gearcase.

Did the 300 mile service on my bike today and only have one question. Is the owners manual correct in showing that over fill line for the primary chaincase is the bottom of the two plugs (the one the holds the case to the engine). Or is it the plug that has the screw driver tip on it near the bottom lip? If I would/could have caught all the old fluid I would have had an idea of how much to put back in. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, however their is a factory change to filling the primary. The factory change calls for 800ml of 15w-40 oil.I used a full quart (940 ml) of 20w-50. This is to help reduce sprage clutch failure on E-start bikes.

Thanks for the info. Just cuoldn't believe the book showed the gearcase bolt to be the oil level overflow. Must have dumped over three quarts in before I saw the small drain at the bottom of the chaincase.

I did mine today as well. The annoying thing about the primary drive cover is that the only way to drain it is to remove it completely. Ah well - I suppose it's a clever way of making sure that you look inside it now and again and check other things while you're there!
