Help, I don't have any local supplier of metric pipe thread, so I will need to order a fitting. Can anyone tell me what the threaded pipe connection to the fuel petcock is? The closest thing I have is 12mm 1.25 pitch - so I bought a nut (not npt) just to see if it's close & it doesn't even start to thread...

Also, is it npt or british pipe thread?

need help please

What tank do you have?  My AVL Electra doesn't have a threaded fitting. It bolts up with 2 bolts.

If you have an older tank or one from India it may be bs threaded....  Contact our hosts is my suggestion if you're in North America.

AVL should have the type that Dan described.
However, if the tank was replaced with an early type, the thread would be a 1/4" BSP(British Standard Pipe) thread.

Wait, it just bolts to the bottom of the tank? Mine has a male threaded pipe sticking out of the bottom, with what looks like an adapter bolt that the petcock bolts to. I have the standard petcock with options written in German and English. Is that the BSP threading, or no?

I guess that was confusing ... I do mean the threaded pipe that allow fuel to go to the petcock. No one locally has metric pipe threads & I don't know if it's npt or British pipe thread ... If I'm going to have to order something, I want to be sure to order the correct thread:

* type
* size
* pitch

I am replacing the petcock valve bowl assembly pictured

got my fuel bowl in today and figured out what to do. I'm going to cut the top flange off the stock fuel petcock and weld (or braze) it on to the threaded pipe that fits the fuel bowl. I'm going to cut each piece at the green line to get as close to stock fuel exit height as I can.  - see photo -

... maybe not - concern about the aluminum being able to braze ... another idea guy at hardware store had would be to grind down threads from tank and re-die cut to 1/8" threads - then it's an easy 3/8" to 1/8" reducer fitting.

Ace, I bought the bike new in fall of '07. It's a Classic AVL, so I would expect it to the the same as the '07/'08 last of the Cast Iron Classics - not sure if the Electra tank had a different fuel bung on the tank. The 1/4" BSP specs look to big:

1/4"BSP specs are: MajDia: 0.5180 - TPI:19 - Pitch: 0.0526"

ok, I'm measuring the left handed threads of the petcock - these are the same as the RT hd threads of the pipe from the tank. (unfortunately the tank is at the shop)

... note, I'm using a cheap plastic template so not super accurate:

... the major dia of the male pipe threads are 29/64 (or 0.453125) & seem to taper to 15/32 (or 0.46875)

I can't find my standard thread template but on my (plastic) mm template it looks dead on 1.0mm pitch  (so, ~25.4 threads per inch) so it may be a fine, 26 TPI?

I found Pingel has conversion petcock nuts - just not listed in sizes this small.

any thoughts?

 ;D Just got an e-mail form Hitchcock's ... thanks guys. Here's the story on the tank tap:
   - "AVL bikes destined for Europe would have the petcock held onto the tank by 2 x M6 screws"
   - "M12 X 1mm if the tank has a male fitting"
   - "ΒΌ BSP if the tank has a female fitting"

I had determined that it must be the M12 x 1.0 & it's good to get confirmation. I've contacted MSC Industrial Supply about getting an adapter. They are checking into it (asked what material) but I don't have price yet. I'll let you know.

Also, I was wondering if I could use my daughters microscope to take a photo with my cell phone. Here are the photos - I was pretty excited about how well they turned out.

I am in the process of adopting pre 1999 tank to my 2005 Bullet classic.  Basically I would like to ask how to remove the threaded union connecting tank to the petcock from the 2005 tank?  I tried a pipe wrench but it seems to be stuck and I do not want to force it.

 And then of course I am wondering if I can use it on the pre 1999 tank.

   Judging by the corrosion on the visible threads in pic #1, those we can't see are most likely corroded, too, though perhaps not as much.
   Have you used any penetrating oil yet? Spray some on the union where it meets the tank boss and let it sit overnight. You then may be able to more easily break it loose.

   Think twice before signing the adoption papers. Other bikes can be very cruel if they find out.  ;)

It is official, it is done. Signed, sealed, delivered.  All I need to do right now, according to Mr. H, is to adopt a compatible petcock.  No one will know.
