Recently got the bike back after body repair (hadn't ridden in 8 months). It continues to have intermittent fuel supply issues -- intermittently, it will hesitate under acceleration. It's been an ongoing issue.

I hypothesize that what is happening is that the fuel line is getting momentarily clogged by sediment resulting from the interior coating of the tank flaking off.

I've continued to ride the bike, because the issue is pretty infrequent.

However, this morning the bike won't start. It turns over just fine, but it won't catch.

Any advice as to how to troubleshoot? The bike's parked on the street, so I may not be able to resolve it myself. I have a competent mechanic I can call to pick it up if I have to.

Have you disconnected the side stand switch?
If not try this first before going in depth into the fuel system.

follow the wire from the switch to a block connecter disconnect and tape up the ends.

You know what? I disconnected it years ago, but I wonder if my mechanic (who didn't know me well and doesn't know Enfields that well either) reconnected it? I'll check this morning.

That would have been too easy. The side stand switch had in fact been reconnected; but disconnecting it didn't solve the problem.

If the bike had not been ridden in 8 months I suspect water in the fuel system.

You may want to drain the tank as best you can, add fresh fuel and see what's what.  Water has a nasty habit of causing issues with fuel injection.

The infamous ground connection at the battery and frame come to mind as well. In addition to the above points, just for peace of mind:

- Clean the air filter
- Clean the spark plug
- Clean the O2 sensor (not sure if required, but I would check this last)
- Use injector cleaner
- Fuel filter clogged? (I would check this last as well)

Have just posted a query regrading fuel tank/pump. Please see my posting...perhaps you may have a similar issue!

Competent mechanic confirms: my underlying problem is chips of fuel tank liner (paint) breaking off and getting into the fuel system.

He's going to flush the fuel system and re-line the tank properly. It'll cost a little money, but I'm well out of warranty and plan to keep the bike, so I'm going ahead.
