I'd like an XLHCR, a seventies café racer all in black, with the old iron 1000cc motor. This would be to look at in the garage, you understand...
Back in 1989 I made the mistake of buying an 883 Sportster, the one with the alloy Evo motor that was supposed to be much better than the earlier iron ones made when H-D was owned by AMF (makers of bowling alleys, I believe) when the quality control was appalling. after spending lots of money trying to make it go and stop better I gave up after about 18 months. Engaging first gear for the first time of the day produced the most horrendous crashing sound, even if I freed off the clutch first by rocking the bike back and forth in first gear. There were apparently a few instances of crankcases being cracked because second and third gear were meshed at the same time. I remember reading that this applied to UK and German 1200 Sporties, or tuned 883s mainly and was because they tended to get ridden as sports bikes, which of course they are not.
I believe the later 5-speed versions with belt drive (mine had a chain final drive) are much better. I actually quite fancy a Harley now, but this would replace my Triumph Sprint GT SE which is becoming a bit heavy to manhandle, not my C5. On the other hand maybe I'll go for the new Triumph twins. Whatever, it won't be a BMW.
