I was looking for an oil drain pan and came across this product. Just wanted to know if any of you have encountered this before and if it works.

These are being used on large engines in -40 deg C and F. Have you ever went for a ride that cold?

I think it's been mentioned here before, an incandescent light bulb underneath the engine will usually warm the oil enough to flow in temps as cold as you're likely to want to ride in.

You guys are all great. I do ride in sub 0 temps (both F and C), so how cold it gets is not a problem (I have good cold weather gear). I don't think putting a light out on my front porch under my bike would be a good idea.

Do you insert that reptile heater from the mouth, or up the rear of the snake?  :o

outside, sub-zero, yeah, 200 watts sounds about right ......   you might need to rig up some sort of a metal strap to hold it to the bottom of your engine.

Three minutes with one of these works wonders on air cooled crank start diesels, might burn your paint though.  ;)

Wouldn't the best way to warm the oil be to start the thing up?

With the correct grade of oil in it, it'll be protected from any startup wear which I presume is your main concern?

I found a 2"x 5" oil heating pad on Google .
Less then $25 , plug in 120v.
That might be something to consider.

If you scroll down the link page, there's a 5" X 4"  150watt heatpad.

I actually use those 5x4 units to heat the bottom of the bird nest boxes during the winter. I could do a full blown test here and tell you if it will heat the bottom of the sump -OR NOT!...lol

It is kind of like an enclosed "Can-Am" 3 wheeler.  I like it.

Exactly!  A friend of mine went to a Can-Am focus group on those and the consensus among those invited was, "Who exactly are you building this for?"  Car guys don't want it, it's not a car.  Moto guys don't want it, it doesn't lean.  Seems they're doing ok with it regardless.  I think they had one of the biggest areas at the International Moto Show.

Still, making something like that but more car oriented should do well.  Supposed to be about $7k US and seat two with some cargo space, heat and all the comforts inside.  Unless gas prices keep dropping and America just starts buying record numbers of trucks and SUVs again.

You could always frighten yourself with one of these British built Berkley's. Enfield propelled one is best for that all round fear factor. :)

I do like the Berkley or how about a Bond with a Villiers engine that had to be kick started from under the hood.
I already have the three wheel bug though, with these 3......

and

To stay on topic...... If wanting to ride in 'Artic' conditions you can get good benefit from wrapping the battery in cooking foil (shiny side in) and tying cardboard around the sump with a foil lining (remove after engine is running and oil starts to warm), Or bank snow around the sump to prevent wind chill freezing any moisture in the engine. This tip came from a friend who toured Siberia in mid winter.......

If you are parking your bike outdoors in sub zero temperatures, unless you " box in" the motor, any external heat from a low wattage heater will be quickly dissipated. In days of old I used to put a fireproof blanket around the engine of my bike with one of these paraffin sump heaters under the engine. It worked fine as long as the blanket was in place.

The Berkley 3 wheeler came with a 2 stroke twin as standard. The four wheeler had the Enfield super meteor motor in it. Uk licence regulations at one time allowed you to drive a three wheeled car on a motorcycle license. At one time you could pick up these cars for nothing so some enterprising individuals would put the meteor engine in the three wheeler, I sat as a passenger in one once and it was terrifying. Check out youtube "Berkley 3 wheeler" some nuts put an even bigger engine in one.

A big thankyou to krimp, because I looked at one of the links posted in this thread the retailer sent me an e mail with their product list which includes a circulating water heating pump which I can use in my domestic system, without having to rip out half my kitchen. Great where these things lead. :)
