That wasn't a good question.
If you know what a .stl is, you know this intellectual property is not going anywhere.

For everyone who doesn't know what a .stl file is.... it is a 3D data file that allows mass production runs of a product to be manufactured. Now, Bulleteers, you know what this request was about.

Fortunately, I live about five miles from the US Copyright office.

This thread on the classic motorworks forum documents every step of the designers' work to create their property. Bottom line, every step has been time stamped and ownership irrefutably established. That's a very solid legal way to establish ownership. Beyond government protected property rights there is the civil issue of denial of economic advantage. This protected right can be litigated in a civil case.

ACE has given a lot of free expert advice on the forum. That's the way he is. This product's creation, manufacture and distribution has been and remains a team effort. Lots of expertise, experimentation, time and financial investment went into it. The team involved has a right to be compensated for its market value. I feel that the idea of giving it away for nothing, like it was something worthless, is less than appropriate.

Bill -- in these new exciting days of 3-D printers (additive manufacturing) and hobbyist makerplaces, neophyte Elephant in his enthusiasm might not have realized the historical intellectual property implications of his request.

Elephant -- is my understanding of your perspective correct?

Bill -- ace.cafe is fortunate that you have the skills, location and energy to protect his intellectual property.  Thanks for explaining your work.

I have to have zero consideration about his diplomacy.
I received this in May of 2018:
"...perhaps so that I can fabricate one myself to the best quality."

By law, rights of a property must be aggressively asserted or the right of ownership is weakened. This is my business. It is not an opinion. The fact that someone wants to duplicate a product, necessitates response. It's not about who is naughty or who is nice. In this case, what I do, is not about being nice.

I have been getting requests like this for 10 years from knock-off artists in India. I don't bother answering those anymore.

Who is surprised by this?  So much is available for free, or offered for free, on the internet - folks are coming to expect it.

Back when my wife and I were making our living as recording and touring musicians, people would often approach us after a concert where we were selling our CDs - one friend would say to the other, "You buy one and I'll buy another, then we can make copies for each other."  Right in front of us, where we could hear them.  They didn't have a clue, and acted surprised when we tried to educate them.  They often didn't even have the decency to be embarrassed by it, and instead went away angry...

Happens in the toy model RC aeroplane world a lot too. Someone comes up with a cool design and may or may not make a small run available for friends and enthusiasts. Before you know it a foam or composite knockoff shows up via china.

Bill -- I apologize for assuming good intentions on the part of neophyte Elephant.  His non-response confirms your assessment.

I am correct in your actions vis a vis ace.cafe IP.

Oh Bert, never apologize for giving someone a chance and for not  thinking ill of someone you don't know.  That's the way we all should  be, in my opinion.  However, feel free to be disappointed that another selfish jerk has surfaced after all...  :(
