Hello, yes, I think that is the pawl. In my prior post I meant to refer to the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group, (CVMG), for advice. have fun, mtrude

Hey Pat there is site you can go to that is an online manual.on this site is a blow up diagram of the 500 gear box and all the parts are given numbers and  names. The site is http://www.enfielder.com/.I must admitt that i cannot see your part well enough to look for telltale signs of excessive ware or other problems. If you cant ascertain its overall condition to judge its serviceability, you may want to take a few more better pics at different angles and visit this and other like sites with a request for assistance from site members.good luck,Mr.Scoob

this is what the pawl should look like.

Yours seems to be intact. It's hard to tell from the angle you have it at, but it appears that the spring loaded pluger behind it is not pushing it forward anough.

can you take a picture looking at the pawl from the side.

There is a difference when you look at them, and when it's on the shaft and I pull on it a little and I crank it will work but when it is pushed in place it skips...
So I am pretty shure that the falty part is this. I just need to know where to get it.
here is a closer pic of mine.

Order a new plunger too. I would call CMW to place the order. I think that you have a combo of prob's. A worn pawl and also a worn plunger and spring that is not pushing the pawl high enough to engage the starter gear properly.

Have CMW send you their 2009 catalog too. Lot's of good stuff.
