my bike is nearing the 1000klm mark and although I said I would not hit the accessory trail till 3000 klm I decided stuff it - lets ride ;D

Welcome back to this forum  :D

Not sure about "sports" mufflers, but I replaced the Hitchcocks one with a short bottle type (full of glasswool). Has a very deep thump, a bit subtle on idle, but louder at revs as compared to Hitchcocks EFI. I had replaced the header pipe recently as well, with the Hitchcocks one.

A couple of vids for your reference:

The classic shorty aka bottle silencer is my pick.

I am very happy with the Harley 1200 Sportster muffler.  Just a bit louder than stock just riding around,  and can be made to bark under hard throttle.  No changing needed to the ECU.  Found mine used for fifteen bucks and only needed a shim to make it fit.

Thanks Steve, my bike doesn't see a lot of tarmac like yours does  :D I've barely done 21k km. And regarding the scraping, I haven't scraped any of the mufflers on this bike. I've had the stock one, then Hitchcocks for like 11,000km +, and this one now. The first thing that hits the asphalt is the rear brake pedal, even in the sharpest and bumpy corners. It's so bad, the brake pedal, where it scrapes, has become a bit flat now haha. I don't carry any luggage and ride solo primarily. Maybe that's another reason why I've never scraped the muffler.

It shouldn't scrape anyway, unless you're carrying a lot of tonnage and are riding like the Isle of Man TT guys  :P

I am using a new takeoff muffler off of a Harley Softail; which has a catalyst in it. Sounds a little louder and in my opinion looks a lot better than the big torpedo that came on it. Cut down part of a Harley pipe heat shield to cover the flange on the original headpipe. Cost was to buy my friend breakfast as he changed exhaust on his Softail.

Looks good and a lot like mine.

I don't know about your catalytic version but I had to drill a few holes thru the plug in the middle of the silencer to get the performance of the old torpedo.  The Harley Sportster silencer I installed was a bit more restrictive.

In any case, getting rid of the torpedo reduces the weight of the bike by over 6 pounds and that's got to be good. :)

NOS 1960's BRITISH COCKTAIL SHAKER, with shower drain baffle. sounds just right. I've been enjoying it 3 years.
Best Wishes, Craig McClure
