I have talked to dozens of Indian riders and Bullet clubs. Many have followed this forum. While away doing contract work (spare moments) I have decided to call in the cards and cash in on the offers. In Spring of 2016 will ride the length of India on an 500cc Enfield. Starting at the southern tip and going to Kashmir. I will avoid the largest cities and focus upon staying with the riders who have offered a place to sleep and a meal. The clubs have offered to help guide me along. The trip will be one thing. The bureaucratic nightmare of actually getting the right bike and all of the required documentation will be the problem. I know that up front. I won't rent a non-UCE and spend time fixing it or hunting a Bullet walla. So, I hope to front load the acquisition process before I get there as much as I can. Then sort out the bike for a few days.
160 people die each day in road accidents. Horrific head on crashes are the norm and gram positive bacteria (no known cure) is rampant. Little indoor plumbing and never safe water (outside of major hotels). But, India is changing and modernizing. Sadly, arming as well. US aid resulted in 600 million in new weapon systems. I want to see it before it changes completely. I've no illusions. But, have read every travel narrative in print on the subject. I have contacts from one end to the other and the clubs working on routes. I won't follow every suggestion, but it is a safety net if I need one.
I know there are plenty of non Enfield (Japanese) bikes in India and maybe a better choice for a ride. I considered the KTM 390. But, as an English rider once told me on Route 66, I came to America to see America, what better way than a Harley? So, India on an Enfield makes sense. Not a new concept, far from it, but still viable alternative to reality TV.
