I really appreciate the effort and engineering behind that build! However, am I the only one who thinks that the poor old Bullet didn't deserve that? What about that thump, what about that magnificent engine, what about the happy feeling you get when you ride? Oh my Gee.  :-X

When we're in the year 2150 or something, I might start developing some feelings for the electric conversion on a Royal Enfield  ;)

I hear you, JVS. I love the sound of that thump. It's what a motorbike is s'posed to sound like.

On the other hand, I get a kick out of anyone taking a bike and doing something crazy with it, especially when it's 'on the cheap' as it looks like this sort of was.

It's worth noting here that my dad sent me a picture of a hybrid car a long time ago. It was an electric something-er-other with a gas-powered generator on the back of it to recharge the batteries. ;)

I just noticed this thread which I missed in June, and I want to comment on the 'thump' vs. electric discussion:  It's possible to love both.

I loved the Royal Enfield since I first laid eyes on it.  I read all I could find for three years, then finally bought one.  I rode it for seven years and loved everything about it.  The look, the sound, the light weight, the tweaking and tuning, the forum.  It made me smarter about motorcycles.

But when the connecting rod broke it was time to dive into a project I was daydreaming about:  An electric conversion:  https://electriccycle.wordpress.com

The look and the sound were gone...or rather changed.  The performance was snappier than ever.  The light weight and handling remained.  Vibes at high speed, gone.  The forum was different:  http://www.elmoto.net but was also full of great people who love to be helpful.  People who love messing with stuff.

This bike has lived two lives and they have both been fun, fun, fun.  I can't begin to describe how much I've learned.  If I had room for more than one motorcycle I could see myself owning at least one gas classic (maybe another RE) and an electric.  In an either/or world, it's easy to forget that you don't always have to take sides.  You can love both and it's not even cheatin'!

Very clean conversion Lunchbag. What is the weight difference, and what is the range on a full charge?

Thanks!  The weight is about the same (~390 lb).  The range is 44 miles in mixed riding.  In the city it will go 55+ miles.

I'm very intrigued by this project!  One year since the first posts here... any further updates on the bike or its operation?

Lunchbag has moved to the Bay Area, I think he now lives in or around Cupertino.  Apparently close enough to be able to ride his bike up to Alice's Restaurant, according to a post that I read recently on an electric motorcycle forum.  I think he is pretty busy working right now.

Can you get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant?
