On the road, involved a blind corner, ambulance, gravel and an audi i was following too close.  I missed all the cars, but locked it up on the gravel and went down on the right side.  >:(

No injury, but my lovely tank (I've grown really fond of it!) now has a big dent... guess i didnt adjust my stops enough.  Rode it home, and here's the damage:

1. Tank dented, but chrome not chipped.
2. Shift lever bent (I bent it back out on the roadside).
3. Headlamp bezel smushed
4. right bar end mirror looking like it has road rash.
5. Clutch lever perch got thrashed about

basically, all cosmetic and im v lucky i didnt end up in the trunk of that audi!

The good news, I had half a dozen people out of their cars immediately and an EMT checking me out.  Gotta say, Im impressed how many folks came to my aide!

Moral of the story - dont follow too close especially in a blind turn;  I know better and still did it.

Wow Dan, that's a scary report!
I'm glad that you weren't seriously hurt!

The damage can all be repaired, and you can even have some fun buying some new parts to make her the way you want again.
The important part is that all your body parts are still there, and operational!

Take it easy this week-end, and relax. Your number was not up.

Lesson learned. Can happen to anyone. Glad to hear you're OK Dan and that you're bike came out of it with a little road rash.

At the IMS a few years ago they had a demonstration on trail braking. Google it if you've never heard of this technique.

Yikes!  I'm glad to hear YOU are ok.  As Ace said, parts can be replaced, and are cheaper than hospital bills.  ;)  I hate blind corners, especially ones involving loose gravel and sand.  I learned early on riding dirt bikes to leave the front brake alone on anything loose or slick.  But I'll admit, sometimes I pull a little harder than I should and almost wash out.  The last time I low sided was pulling into work and was leaned over to turn when the rear tire hit sand.  The results were about the same as you except I was on throttle not brakes.

Safe to assume you were wearing proper gear?  :)

Thanks gents. Proper gear save my foot and shoulder!  ATGATT folks. It works.

I've done a lot of trail riding and am familiar with this technique. Today tho my head wasn't in the game. I'm glad it came out the way it did!

Here's my tank:

Think I'm going to leave it that way for the rest of the season as a reminder.

I'm also thinking of taking your suggestion ace. Time for new tank, head and rear sets  ;D

Dan,
We are currently doing another AVL head right now. If you inform me that you can get it in right away, I can order the valves for it with this other batch we are doing, and it will be done quicker.
Just FYI.

I highly recommend the rear seats!  Put a band-aid on the dent, she'll be ok.   ;)

Glad you and the bike live to ride another day. Your local tank specialist might be able to remove the dent.

Thanks again all for the well wishes!  I went over the bike thoroughly; somehow blew out the air screw on the TM32 (i rejetted for warmer weather this am - i was tuning).  Pretty sure its completely unrelated, but v weird timing!

Glad you're ok!  It's always good to give us these reminders, but it's a shame to bash your bike up for our sakes!

It's a hard reminder.  Glad you're OK.  Thanks for the refresher for the rest of us.

Cheers,

Dan K.

Good to hear you are fine.  ATTGATT is important.  Substance over style, IMO.

I had a sliding high side back in 2001 when I assumed that someone was ahead of me removing stuff from the curves for me.  Lucky I landed on wet grass instead of a concrete curb.

Yeah, you really have to be careful out there.  The increasing # of distracted drivers is making it more dangerous by the day.
