Earlier today, we started this little monster for the first time. It is all Royal Enfield and they could have made these from what was available in the factory prior to 1960, apart from the 5 speed 'box. What might have been  ::)

Bravo !

Was that fuel mist or smoke at the carb....and the popping?

That was fuel mist - I might have to employ a softer inlet cam with an earlier valve closing time. The popping adds to the 'angry' sound it now makes, but that was the first ever run of this engine, with carburation [1 1/2" GP carb] and ignition timing settings just estimated for now, so improvements are quite likely on the cards.

Very cool!
As long as it goes well at the higher rpms, I wouldn't care much about the fuel reversion mist at lower rpms. This engine is all about the higher rpms.

It does sound pretty devilish!

BW, this sounds and looks fantastic! Now I want to do this with my 500. I am thinking  I could use my standard 500 head, 500 alloy barrel and 84mm piston, but my calculations show that I need a 63mm stroke crank, or 59mm if I use the 87mm forged piston.
Is such a crank assembly available from the Redditch "parts bin" or is this a special that you have made?

I realise that there are many other factors to be addressed , such as achieving a high compression ratio with the reduced stroke, and cam profile/timing, but I would like to address the fundamental crank issue first and build from there.

My favorite part of that video concerns the little girl on the pink bicycle: she may be young, but she's already learned most of what she needs to know to get through life: "It's all about the noise with boys!"

BW, you should quote her in your signature line!

Thanks for the positive comments, everyone!
The little girl is my Daughter, or 'Little Miss B.W.' and she has a knack of being able to talk about just about anything and do it very quickly as well!
Camera work was by my Son, or 'B.W. Junior'. Both ride small motorbikes and enjoy a bit of spannering occasionally themselves.
Back to the machine in question, the crank was specially made to my specs and has a 63mm stroke. I measured the compression ratio today and it came out at no less than 13:1, a little more than I had conservatively estimated, so I am very pleased with the outcome.

 Hi Ace,
Yes and we are dyno testing tonight, as it was all set up just in the 'ball park' timing, cams and carb wise when I assembled it. I hope it is an improvement over the other two engines after all the work - we have 33 bhp @ rear wheel to beat. The 500 F.A.B. is all ready for some action, by the way !!
