Hi everyone, happy Spring to those of you in the northern latitudes. I took my 2014 Bullet 500 out for a routine chain tightening before I start riding for the season, and when I went to tighten things back up I found that the 30mm nut would slip when being tightened. I removed it and the castle nut, and saw the reason- the bolt that it screws on to is warped!

I don't have the repair manual- what part is this? What will I need to replace? I hope not the whole wheel.

I have had this bike less than 1 year. Hopefully this is covered under some warranty.

To me it looks like only the nut itself must have stripped out.  Unless there is something I'm not seeing.....

There's a flat spot on top and bottom of that outer bolt. Threads are worn away and it is warped.

It is Short Spindle for rear wheel drum sprocket - Part No. 580355

If its threads are stripped, take off the wheel to remove it and replace with a new one. As HOO has said the large nut may also be damaged, part no. 580359.   

Just confirm these part numbers again with CMW when you order by phone.

It is likely that it was cross threaded when installed at some point, or over tightened.

The Short Spindle is warped because of following reason - the edge of spindle is sticking out, beyond the thin 30 mm large hex nut. When the Castle Nut 24 mm is tightened, it presses and pushes on the edge of spindle.

Before putting on castle nut, make sure that the edge of spindle is not sticking out. But remains well within the margin of thin large hex nut.

Thank you for this valuable information! I've asked my dealer to order a new spindle and nut.

If the edge of the spindle is sticking out after tightening, what do you think is wrong or needs adjusting? I had a heck of a time getting the whole rear wheel to be tight enough that the left side snail adjuster wouldn't keep falling out- so pushing the wheel more to the left side (to expose less of the spindle) wouldn't help.
