Time for my first oil change and I need to get a filter. Where do you purchase yours? I am reluctant to order one from India as it will take awhile to come in.

You can order them from the host here, Nfield Gear.  Just click on the button on the top left of the page.

Yup...our host has "kits" that are great.  Everything you need and few extras and supports our gracious host.

I've also given up on the eBay/india stores and just stick with our host.

If it was the 5 filter kit you won't need another one for a long time.

After the first 300 mile oil change which is really important because of all of the metal chips and other debris, Royal Enfield says the oil needs to be changed about every 1800 miles and the filter needs to be changed about every other oil change, or 3600 miles.

A lot of us change the filter more often than this but I thought I should mention what the factory recommends. :)

The handbook for my 2014 Continental GT states an oil and filter change every 6000kms/3700 miles.

Has this interval increased with the newer bikes? While I accept some people might want to change the oil and filter sooner, that's not what's recommended in my handbook.

IMO, 3700 is way too many miles for 2 qts of oil.  WAAAAAY too many miles.  I wonder why they changed it and what was their reasoning?  ???

I agree - I'll feel happier changing it sooner but that's not what RE recommends.

I've attached the relevant page from my handbook.

Perhaps you are reading that chart wrong.  I'm reading/seeing:

300 - 2,000 - 3,750 - 6000..........

So I'm reading that chart as every 1,750 miles, filter every other change.  But what is weird is that after 6,000 miles, it looks like the interval goes to every 2,000 miles.  That's strange.

I see it as the line for engine oil and filter has an R for replace every other box i.e. oil and filter change every 6000kms/3700 miles.

If it was every 2000 miles/3000kms there would be an R in each box wouldn't there?

I see what you're saying now.  I still wouldn't go that long on oil changes tho.  New oil too often never killed a motor, but old oil will.

My B5 handbook is the same intervals, I'm happy to run at these intervals but wouldn't go over the recommended 3700miles between changes.
oil capacity isn't an issue, 2.75liters in the 500, my GL1200 only has 3.2litres and can go as far as 8,000 miles between oil changes, I do it at 6,000.....
it's up to the owner at the end of the day.

I change my oil every 6 months or 1000-1500 miles,...which ever happens first.
Pushing 2 quarts/ litres of oil to the max is not smart.

I'll add that your car goes 3000 miles on 5 qts of with a much larger oil filter, and anything over that is considered damaging to the motor.  An Enfield had about 2 qts of oil, with oil temps at 200-300°F with a tiny filter.  Just saying.

+1  2000 miles max - Cheap insurance and give a guy an excuse to hang out in the garage and drink beer and stare at your bike.
