Has anybody used these yet? I just got them...Guess they mount different than I expected, and I want to see how others have done it.

Yes, but not very successfully.  I tried lacing them in an x fashion on each side over the rear fender supports.  The right side though comes very close to the tail pipe if   The metal parts ended up scratching my paint.  I ended up changing them out for a pair from Hitchcocks.

Those are just about exactly the bags I put on my '08 AVL a couple years ago (without the RE badge). If you wind those straps around the fender frames right, after a lot of experimentation, they fit good & tight & don't scratch anything. Or get burned. (This picture was before the front plate, TM 32, Ace can, battery removal & dual horns).

You could always build a frame if you don't care for the fit or location.  That's what I did.

???  They feel like medium weight canvas.

I recently purchased a pair of these ex British army1958 pattern haversacks. https://www.silvermans.co.uk/tabid/62/MOTORCYCLE/ACCESSORIES/GREEN+MOTORCYCLE+PANNIERS/0/SKU/7-197-20179-1931/Default.aspx
The firm also do them in black.
They work well on my B5 although I still have Givi frames fitted for Givi hardcases (which I hate!). There are plenty of straps and buckles for a multitude of attachment points.

I've got a pair on mine, not the Nfield gear bags, but similar musette bags from an army surplus store.  I'm guessing they are pretty much the same. I just looped the backpack straps through the fender rail and my temporary fix to hold them in place was to loop the excess strap and pin it together with several safety pins.  Mine have faded quite a bit since installation.  I'll likely replace them this summer and scotchguard the new ones and sew the straps for a more permanent solution.  I also cut some pieces of GPO-3 and slid them in the inside pocket and bottom of the bags to give them some rigidity.

Bear with me, please. This is a test. I don't seem to be able to upload anything today.

           Thanks. It worked here.

Similarly, I use these inexpensive OD green canvas bags.  I fabricated a 4-sided box out of a showboard material commonly used by school children for displays.  This box fits inside of the canvas bag to maintain its basic shape.  The red reflectors are attached with a household glue ("GOOP").

Don't want to be the naysayer here, but mounted that way they will scrub all of your paint off down to the metal where the bag contacts.  Also, watch the bag that rests or almost rests on your exhaust.  I ended up putting some aluminum tape on the bottom of a set I tried to keep them from cooking.

Ask me how I know all of this... :)

1.  Maybe, but the bags, themselves, don't really contact the paint in obvious places.  The bag straps do indeed touch the fender supports, but that's okay with me as it only adds to the overall military patina.
2.  Oh yes, I know that very well!  The bags I have now are medium size; I originally purchased the identical "jumbo" size bags.  Even though the bottom of the right side jumbo bag was 2 or 3 inches above the exhaust pipe, it wasn't enough.  Last summer, I was riding home from church and when I got within ~100 yards of pulling into my driveway, I happened to look down and was shocked to see the bag smoking/smoldering.  In the short time it took to pull into the driveway, the bag was (literally) ablaze.  Thank goodness, I was wearing my thick leather gloves which allowed me to rip the bag off and away from the bike.  Somehow, I was able to muster the wherewithall to raise my garage door and rush in and grab a gallon jug of distilled water and extinguish most of the fire.  One thing that really surprised me was that no one called the fire department.  The size of the fire wasn't huge, but the amount of smoke that filled up my front yard was incredible.
Amazingly, there was absolutely no permanent damage to the bike.  I learned a valuable lesson that day.  Thank you Jesus.

Catbird - I'm glad you are okay and the bike made it without any damage.  Those bags do look cool on the military C5.
