Fantastic!

I'd love one of those for my 350 engine, short-stroked and high-ported.  Maybe a few years down the road I can get that one underway.

How do you register that frame/bike in NY?

Sol,
So, you like vintage pretty girls too. I've always had a thing for Carol Kane myself. Dyan Cannon too.

Mike,
I can only guess about the weight. I think the new frame is about 26lbs. I don't know what the bullet frame weighs. More than that though, I'm pretty sure. The swing arm is being re used though.
I ditched the casquette, another anchor, but the alloy top yoke replacing it is fairly substantial. Plus a separate headlight so that's probably a wash.
The tank is aluminum alloy, but it holds a bit more so I don't think I save much weight there either.
The old and new seats are more or less equal.
I lost the old toolboxes but gained the mock oil tank.
I guess I can't really answer you.
But you can try it out this spring. ;)

I think I'm just gonna take my old reg. plate and slap it on the new frame. No one will know the difference.

I wanted to mimic the look of a Manx racer, and as I have a long inseem anyway I didn't think the slimline was necessary. Probably, mostly, I just liked the idea of it. More emotional than technical.

+1  I did this before and it worked out okay.  A friend of mine that worked at DMV game me a hint - Be sure and stamp the serial number on the frame in a similar location as factory.  This eliminated 99% of the issues you could have with the inspectors at the DMV.  It took me about 20 minutes to do the job, but about a week to locate anyone that had the hardened stamps/dies.

I'm just going to drill out the rivets and re attach to the new bike. It's the easiest thing to do and DMV won't be any the wiser.

Someone asked earlier in the thread about weight, had a chance to weight it yet? A cheap mechanical scale from Walmart will work (one wheel at a time of course :P) And that frame with the original swingarm, what does the wheelbase come out to? Oh yeah, Sweet Ride ;)

For those curious about weight savings ... FWIW a Standard frame weighs 11.5 kilograms - I weighed it myself on a digital scale.
That's ballpark 25 pounds.

The heaviest things in a bullet are the crank (12 KG) , clutch (5.3 KG), Rear sprocket and hub (over 6 KG), gearbox (6 KG for a 5 speed, more for a 4 speed)

Even the swingarm is quite light (2.5 KG)

I always wonder what I can really remove from the bike and end up finding that there's really not much!

I suspect you took your photos with an I-phone. I-phone to I-phone they will correct themselves when they open as the code is for an I-platform.  When you post from an I-phone to the net turn your phone the other way before you post.  The WWW and the 87% of us on Microsoft (the rest of the world) cannot read the Appple code to auto-rotate the photo.  Done geeking!  Hondo out!

Wow!  Frame and build are both gorgeous.  I've thought the same about custom frames with no serial number.  I'm guessing on something like this if you just remount the plaque DMV will never be the wiser and everything will be just fine.

For the rest of us!

That looks rather splendid.   8) 8) 8)  Have fun...

Adrian, thanks for figgering out how to do that. I made several attempts but gave up after I kept flipping the pic the wrong way. Hondo is probably right about it being a mac vs. pc thing. Not that I would have doped that out on my own, however. :o
Wow, that is sleek!  Reminds me of a WWII fighter :D
And thanks for that.

Thanks, Scott.

Fireball #10 (Beefy) in a new replica wideline "Featherbed" frame built by Billy Kerchner of Rofomoto.

With that GP head this is going to be one fast bullet. And gorgeous to boot !

Does it get a disk brake?

Looks like you've got the twin leading shoe front brake, that should be good enough.

About the only thing I see that could be ditched is the center stand. Not sure how much that and brackets etc adds up to. Your bike would look right at home on a paddock stand! Nice

Chuck,

any update on Featherbed Fireball #10? Have you had a chance to ride it yet, or is it sat in some workshop getting Ace's GP conversion?

Regards,

I think I saved a lot of weight with an upholstered aluminum fender-seat that I had fabbed up.  The stock seat, fender, and brackets all together were heavy.

Lighter alloy rims save weight where it matters most, too.

The battery weight can be cut quite a bit, or even eliminated with a capacitor. (I still like having the battery...a 4AH antigravity model weighs almost nothing...)

I used triple trees for the fork instead of the casquette, but I don't think that saved any weight in the end, despite looking less massive.

But the centerstand, despite being a boat anchor, was just too damned useful to let go of right now.  Maybe once I've got the bike running perfectly and it's proven over long distances it won't seem so necessary...

There should be some news soon.
The bike was due to go to Chumma to have the roller rocker head put on it. I am guessing that it is there now.
However, it will need to be measured for new pushrods, so there will be a little waiting after that to get them ordered, and in.

That pancake filter is obviously not ideal. Well spotted. My old Ace can wouldn't fit so I was thinking of something like making the battery box, which is right there, serve double duty as an air filter housing. Or maybe just mount a bellmouth. I'll see.

The expectations for this motorcycle must be sky high - I really hope it does go like a rocket on pump gas, we know it should handle OK! I just hope the motor isn't going to out-perform the brakes, take care.  ;)

Une question, s'il vous plait...

When going to a different frame such as this Featherbed repro, what hubs are you using, and what is the cush drive arrangement, if any?  Didn't a lot of brit bikes put the cush assembly in the clutch rather than the hub?

-Mike

This is a specialty Featherbed conversion which is designed to use Bullet front end and rear end. You can use these parts from your Bullet, for keeping costs down for the conversion.
So, it uses the Bullet hub and cush drive.

What he said.
My old swingarm (w/ new bushes) and my old forks and steering assembly.
BTW, I got the bike back a week ago and have managed to squeeze in about 150 miles so far. It feels terrific. The ride is solid and planted in a way the old Bullet frame could never be. The Fireball engine now has a chassis worthy of it. This is everything I ever wanted in a motorcycle.
I'll throw up a few more pics later.

Very cool stuff, Chuck.  Glad to see and hear it all.  I really think my spare 350 engine may find a home in one of these.

Colollary question...if one wanted to choose a different hub for the rear (say, to run a disc or another sprocket), how would you go about that, cush-drive-wise?  The Enfield drive line demands its presence, I assume...is there a way to use a different clutch or are aftermarket hubs available to accept rubber inserts?

You'd have to find a hub with a cush drive. Not that hard. Almost all bikes have one.

I'm waiting for the package from Chumma with the pushrods and screws, so I can send the right screws for those rocker boxes, and get your pushrods made.

If you think it is a rocket now, just wait till that stuff gets on it!!

Working my way there.  It's still a gradual piece-by-piece fight, but it's running and all major components are present and working...!  I get to ride it whenever I want now, so that's the most important thing.

They could build it for anything you want, I imagine, if you're willing to pay.  I bet a CRF 450 would rip...between maintenance intervals...

Billy custom makes the mounts included with the price of the frame (which is quite reasonable, I might add). He's done Enfields, Tritons, Sportsters, he has one of Aniket's Musket twins mocked up, he's even stuffed a Kawasaki W1 in one of his frames.

I was just thinking those quad engines are pretty common, a big single, and put out 30-50hp depending on state of tune.  Of course you would have to mount a radiator too.  Might be a nice bike though, modern engine with a classic frame.

Exactly, plus the convenience of a 6 speed tranny and low overall maintenance.  Plus they sound cool with a nice FMF exhaust or similar.  :)

The obvious choice for a modern engine in the featherbed frame is the new Triumph Bonneville twin cylinder engine, creating a modern Triton.
