Everyone will know this apart from me but here goes anyway.

When checking for spark I've always kicked the engine over while having the plug resting on the cylinder head.
It's a bit awkward leaning over while operating the kick stand to see if there's a spark especially in bright light.

So:

Take the points cover off, move the engine till the points are closed then just flick them open. If all is well you see the plug spark and you're on the right side of the bike.

I only used to do it the other way 'cos I started out on 2 strokes with flywheel mags and that was the only way.

Of course the ignition switch has to be on.  ;)

Every one will know this apart from him but here goes anyway. If you wet a match stick and put it in the end of the  HT wire and place it close to the engine block and kick the engine the match will light.

Now  I have actually now idea if this works or not so if someone could just pop out into the garage and give it a go before we go any further.
