Hi all -

I have decided to sell my pal.  Been a really solid bike and I just cant ride it anymore like I used to.  So I'm trying to figure out what kind of money I should ask and if anyone might be interested here.  I've replaced the original seat and turn signals and added a ped slicer.  Black with gold striping.  Otherwise she's all the same and still runs great.  I live in Round Rock, TX (pretty much Austin, TX).

Any advice would be helpful.  Thanks all!

You have one of the last irons manufactured (that's a plus) ...How many miles? From the sounds of it, it 's pretty much stock..Assuming you're in the 8 -12 k mile range, I would think 3 - 3.5 k would be a good set of numbers to play with..Sorry you're finding it harder to ride.  GM
Oh Magoo you done it again

Ya.  I thought about keeping it and storing it.  My son is 14 and I offered it to him when he's ready but he doesnt have any interest in it.  I know he'll change his mind and want it later - so it's tough to decide on this.  I could use the money but getting another one later would suck and this is - like was mentioned - the last Iron they made.  Hmmm... if I store it I'd be draining how much of the fluids?  Gas for sure.  Not sure what else for a long term (a few years) event.

Drain the oil, run the gas out of carb, drain tank, squirt some oil in cylinder kick it over a few times to spread oil around. Put it up on compression. put it on center stand. Pull the battery. Your done this will keep it ready for years. Cover it if you want to keeps it from getting to dusty.  ERC

Put it up on compression.

Can you elaborate?

Just curious: why drain the oil?  I would have thought maybe leave it in, then from time to time kick it through several cycles to circulate the oil and lube the rings and cylinder walls...
but would the oil 'go bad' and have a detrimental effect?

If it was old, used oil it would contain some acids that could slowly cause some damage.

If it was brand new oil it wouldn't hurt a thing.

Kicking it thru a few times would pump some oil up to the rockers on a UCE bike but it would take many many kicks on an Iron Barrel to do that.

There has to be oil in the crankcase for the scavenge pump to pump out and send up to the rocker arms.  Because the oil pump in an Iron Barrel turns so slowly it would take a whole bunch of kicks to get it to do anything worthwhile.

The reason you drain the oil is these bikes have habit of it draining into the crankcase over time whether it's on TDC or not. ERC

Yeah, but if you drain the oil now the stuff that's in the head is still going to be there and still drain into the crankcase. Does the iron barrel have a drain under the crank?

There isn't enough left up top to worry about it draining into the crankcase. ERC

I purchased my RE Bullet 500 in January, military with metal saddle bags, I paid $2500, but have been told it was worth more.... no thought of getting rid of it though. :)
Take your time leaving but hurry back
