Just changed my factory silencer over to an HD Sportster silencer. Haven't yet drilled out the centre screen. Gnarly seems to be running fine so far for the short ride I took it on. No backfiring, does seem to be running hot tho. Wondering if the HD silencer will make the motor run hotter than usual , increase back pressure, or any other adverse effects I should watch out for?

I've been running the sportster silencer for a few thousand miles, no problems, no worries.  Looks good, sounds good, all good.

There should be no issues whatsoever.  There is less back pressure than the OEM bazooka, less weight, no backfiring and the thump is nice and reasonably louder than stock, but not deafening or blatty......have fun with it!

There is no way I know of to get rid of the discoloration on the stock header pipe. I tried Simichrome polish, it was removing the chrome (yes the chrome is that bad) Aside from having it rechromed (expensive) or wrapping it, you just have to live with the discoloration. I don't mind it at all on the header pipe, reminds me of my old Triumph. I don't like the brown circle on the "silencer", but hopefully I will have a different silencer soon.

Newer Harley mufflers are just as quiet as anything else anymore. Even their Screamin Eagle pipes are now street legal. Damned EPA. Fortunately you can get aftermarket pipes for Harleys. I'm wondering if there is a louder than stock slip on Sportster muffler available. I like the EFI pipe, but it does not seem to hold up very well. A Sportster muffler should last much longer, and still doesn't look out of place on the Enfield.

Didn't like the looks of the exhaust connection or the tab for the factory heat shield. Decided to try using the original heat shield ( HD silencer didn't come with one) . What do think, keep it or look for an HD heat shield?

Personally, I would get the HD heat shield.  It is much smaller and the quality of the chrome is much better.  The RE shield on the HD looks way oversized.

You know...it is not bad looking.  Kind of looks like a Space Age version of the EFI silencer I have on my bike.

I think it looks very unique, not bad at all. However, I found a heat shield for the pipe was a lot better to have than one on the muffler. As for the tab on the pipe, I ground mine off and used the aforementioned heat shield to cover it.
How did you install the screw recepticals on the harley mufflers?

Barenekd, have it attached temporarily with a single hose clamp and a bolt through the heat shield + the tab on the pipe. Still working on better means of attachment.

The RE heat shield on the HD muffler looks great.

The true sportster muffler (for their 883 engine) is nice and quiet on my B5.  Before that I had a larger muffler from one of the larger bikes (1300cc) - it looks the same, just longer and fatter.  That muffler barked quite a bit more, but, still had the same size inlet.
