I am picking up a new to me 2003 RE Military ES tomorrow with 150 miles on the clock. The current owner does not have the manual for the bike. I plan to service it/ all fluids, as soon as I get it home before I start to break it in. I am sure this has been asked before but what is the best manual to aquire and what is the best break in for the iron barrel.  Also any recommendations for mods. to this year model would be helpful. I have owned and ridden antique bikes for a number of years to include 500 singles but have never owned a Royal Enfield. Thanks in advance for suggestions. I plan to add a set of trials/dual sport tires and use the RE as a back roads bike here in the mountains.

Welcome!    8)

You can check out my thread on fluid changes for the Iron Barrel, complete with videos.  You'll want to consult others and the Snidal book as well.

The Snidal book is a great start, but a factory service manual and factory parts manual will complete the set.  I can't imagine a 2003 with 150 miles on it.  If that is correct please search the forum for break in procedures and follow them as close as possible.

Just keep the speeds under 50mph until at least 1000 miles, and use the gears to keep the rpms in a medium range.

Thanks for the advice, I am doing an 18hour iron butt round trip in the truck tomorrow to pick it up.  Can't wait to get it home and start the break in. Thanks again.

A free flowing pipe & muffler plus a larger carb & manifold make a major difference in power & drivability with little to no loss in low end power. If funds prohibit that a re-jet (richer) of the stock card helps. But beware if your bike has a catalytic converter in the head pipe richer jetting may overheat it.

There isn't on my '02, I thought they started the hot tubes on the AVL.

They were also on later Iron Barrels.
Not sure of the start date. Probably around 2004 or 2005.

3am and the Bullet has landed in my garage in Tennessee since the question was asked.  160 mile on the clock, titled as an 03, 4 speed, ES.
So, another question, I have heard so much negitive about the ES, should i pull it now while its not broked or just wait?  Does anyone know if the right hand shift conversions are still availible, seems like a good thing to do.

Yes ES is horrible and a broken sprag while kick starting left me stranded once.
I would rip it out, sprag gear and starter. It you want a kickstart only inner cover a kit is avalible and quite straightforward install. And RH shift conversions are still avalible.

Personally, if you don't plan on using or needing the ES then I would get it the hell off of the bike.  They are a weak problem design that will eventually fail.  Pretty much guaranteed.  As Mazza said, they sell primary covers that convert from ES to KS only.
